Ing. Alexia Grech studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Malta. After completing her second year of studies, in September 2004, she carried out a traineeship in the field of Naval Design in Rostock, Germany, where she worked in a design office and practiced her skills in AutoCAD. Alexia graduated with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in December 2006.
Her interest in the biomedical field has already won her great success. In her third year of studies, she won the 2005 Award for Innovative Mechanical Engineering Design Solutions were together with another three colleagues she was involved in the design of a walker for a child suffering from Spina Bifida. During her final year she worked on a dissertation related to the design of customised hearing aids and was awarded the Most 'Innovative Design' Mechanical Engineering Project by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED, Malta) and the Best Mechanical Project by the Chamber of Engineers (COE, Malta).
In July 2006 she started working as an Industrial Engineer in the local manufacturing industry at ST Microelectronics.
In October 2006 Ing. Grech was awarded a three year scholarship by the Ministry of Education of the Government of Malta which encouraged her to further her studies in the biomedical field. She joined the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering (DIME) as a Post Graduate Trainee in December 2006. She is currently reading for a PhD degree with the DIME.
She also worked for a few months as part-time Business Executive for the Malta Medical Devices Association within the Kordin Business Incubation Centre, and lectured AutoCAD at the Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology.
In parallel with her research work, Alexia was working as a part-time Research Project
Engineer on an R&I project awarded by the Malta Council for Science &
Technology on the design of laparoscopic tools and the generation of an IT
tool to aid designers. She was also coordinating an
FP6 funded project by the name COOREERS in the thematic area of NanoMatPro
(Nanotechnologies,
materials engineering and Production – NMP) for National Contact Points (NCPs)).
Alexia was also involved in an EU project in collaboration with the Edward Debono Institute of the University of Malta, nicknamed FEPIC (Female
Engineers Pushing Innovation in Companies) with the objective of developing
an e-tool of creative tools to aid females in engineering leadership
positions.
Ing. Grech is a graduate member of IED as
well as a council member of the IED Malta Branch.
She is also a student member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
(SME) and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
