DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Social
Studies Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies appointed as indicated in
regulation 5;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Social Studies.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in
February 2003 or later.
Eligibility.
have:
( a ) been registered as a regular student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) completed the appropriate studies (coursework and
long essay) in Social Studies in the area of
specialisation chosen;
( c ) passed all the prescribed examinations; and
( d ) satisfied all the requirements laid down in these
regulations and in any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Registration.
Diploma upon satisfaction of the requirements for admission as a
regular student of the University in accordance with the Admission
Regulations.
Board of Studies.
entrusted to a Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the
purpose, on the recommendation of the Workers’ Participation
Development Centre (WPDC) Board.
(2) The Board of Studies shall be composed as follows:
( a ) the WPDC Director (or his delegate) as Chairman;
( b ) the Course co-ordinator as Vice-Chairman;
( c ) at least two but not more than five members appointed

from amongst academics involved in the delivery of
the course; and
( d ) two students elected by and from amongst students
following the course.
Course structure.

6. (1) The course of studies shall be structured in such a way
that it can be completed within a minimum period of two semesters
and a maximum of four semesters of full-time studies, or their
equivalent in part-time studies.
(2) A student may not take the final examinations earlier than
one year of full-time studies or its equivalent in part-time studies
after admission to the course.
(3) The course consists of:
( a ) study-units for which not less than twenty credits are
assigned; and
( b ) a long essay to which an additional two credits are
assigned.
(4) The study-units shall be in one of the following areas of
specialisation:
( a ) Industrial Relations
(i) Level 1: Basic social science study-units from a
labour perspective:
Sociology of Work
Labour Economics
Political Science
Psychology of Interpersonal Behaviour
(ii) Level 2: Core study-units in the following areas
in which issues in industrial relations are further
explored: 
Human Resource Development
Labour Relations and Labour Law
Worker Participation
Leadership and Communication Skills
( b ) Gender and Development
(i) Level 1: Basic social science study-units from a
"gender perspective":
Anthropology / Sociology
Economics
Political Science
Psychology of Interpersonal Behaviour
(ii) Level 2: Core study-units in the following areas
in which the gender perspective is further
explored:
Communication
Psychological Development
Social Policy and Institutions
Work and the Economy

( c ) Management of Cooperatives
(i) Level 1: Basic social science study-units with
special reference to cooperative organisations:
Sociology of Work

in which the study of cooperative organisation is
further explored:
Theory and Practice of Cooperative

( d ) Occupational Health and Safety

( e ) Occupational Guidance and Career Counselling

guidance and career counselling:

(ii) Level 2: Core study units in the following areas
in which the study of occupational guidance and
career counselling is further explored:
Lifelong Learning
Social Dialogue
Employment Schemes
Profiling and Job Classification Skills.
(5) A catalogue, with the list of specific study-units, and the
credits assigned to each study-unit shall be approved by the WPDC

Board following the recommendation of the Board of Studies and
shall be published before the start of each semester.
(6) Some study-units may be indicated as compulsory and
others as optional.
(7) Some study-units may also involve guided fieldwork.
Students may be required to submit written reports on their
fieldwork and this shall be considered as an essential component of
the course for which credits shall be assigned.
Assessment. 7. (1) In each semester of the course, students shall be
assessed in the study-units covered during that semester in
accordance with the criteria proposed by the Board.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F indicates
Fail.
(3) A student who registers for a study-unit and does not
complete it shall be considered to have failed that study-unit.
(4) A student who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to re-
take the assessment procedure of that study-unit. A student may be
allowed to repeat only once each of the study-units. In such cases
the maximum grade a student can obtain is a D.
(5) In special circumstances, provided that due warning has
been given, the Board may recommend to Senate that a student
terminates the course if, on the basis of reports given by the
lecturers involved, the Board is not satisfied that the student is
making the expected progress.
(6) A student who gets fewer than eight credits in any year of
the course shall not be allowed to continue the course or to take the
final examinations, except in special circumstances and with the
approval of Senate.
(7) A student may not take a study-unit for which he does not
have the prerequisites, or without taking the concurrent study-units
indicated, except with the permission of the Board.
Long essay.

8. (1) Each student shall be required to write a long essay of
approximately 5,000 words on an approved topic intended to
illustrate his ability to integrate the various aspects of the course of
studies.
(2) The long essay shall be submitted by not later than the start
of the final examinations referred to in regulation 9(1), unless
otherwise specified by the Board of Studies.
(3) When a long essay is not approved, the student shall be
given the opportunity to re-submit it once only, within a stipulated
time. After resubmission the maximum grade that can be awarded
shall be a D.
Final 
examinations.
9. (1) Final, written, comprehensive examinations shall be
held at the end of the course. Two papers shall be set in the final
examinations. Only students who have obtained at least twenty
credits shall be admitted to the examinations.
(2) Students may also be required to sit for a  viva voce

examination.
(3) A student who fails in any or both papers of the final
examination is entitled to re-sit the examination in the paper/s
failed. If successful, such a student shall be placed in the Pass
category of the final grading.

10. (1) The final grading shall be based on the study-units, the
long essay and the final examination.
(2) A student shall not be awarded the Diploma unless a pass is
obtained in each part of the course of studies (that is, obtained not
less than twenty credits for the study-units and be approved in the
long essay and in the final examinations).
(3) The final examination are allocated forty per cent (40%) of
the final grade. The study-units and the long essay are allocated the
remaining sixty per cent (60%).
(4) The names of students who have qualified for the Diploma
shall be published in alphabetical order in the following categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
(5) Students who obtain at least ten credits during Year I of the
course and opt to discontinue the course, and students who are not
eligible for the award of the Diploma according to the provisions of
subregulation (2) but who have obtained at least ten credits during
Year I of the course, shall be eligible for the award of the
Certificate in Applied Social Studies.
