DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL WORK COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 45 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Social
Work Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board " means the Board of the Institute of Social Welfare;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Social Work.

Eligibility for the 
Diploma
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma a student must
have:
( a ) registered for and successfully completed the course as
provided in these regulations;
( b ) passed the final examinations for the Diploma; and
( c ) satisfied all other requirements laid down in these
regulations and any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Registration and 
special course 
requirements.
4. (1) A candidate may be registered for the course if he:
( a ) is eligible for admission to the University as a regular
student in terms of the Admission Regulations of the
University; and
( b ) satisfies an interviewing board, set up for this purpose,
that he has the aptitude to follow such course.
(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of subregulation (1),
University graduates and applicants over 23 years whose
qualifications are considered sufficient by the Board, may be
exempted from any other requirements for admission to the course
except that required under subregulation (1)( b ).
Duration of course.

(2) A student may not take the final examinations earlier than
three years after admission to the course of studies.
(3) In special circumstances, the Board may allow a student,
for good and sufficient reason, to extend his studies over a
maximum of four years, under such conditions as the Board may in
each case determine.

Course of studies. 6. (1) A course of studies for the Diploma shall consist of
study-units for which not less than 30 credits shall be assigned.
(2) The course shall be composed of:
( a ) Module 1: Basic knowledge in the Social Sciences:
Sociology, Psychology, Research
Methods.
( b ) Module 2: Social Work:
Methods, Skills, Values, Practical
Placements.
( c ) Module 3: Social Policy:
Social Welfare, Health, Legislation, Social
Administration.
Catalogue of 
study-units
7. (1) Before the start of each academic year, the Board shall
publish a catalogue of study-units and of the credits assigned to
each study-unit, following its approval by Senate.
(2) The catalogue shall give details of the study-units. A
study-unit may include, or altogether consist of, assessed practical
placements where appropriate. A student taking such a study-unit
may be required to write written reports on the placement carried
out.
(3) The catalogue shall also include the method of assessment
for each study-unit, which study-units should be taken concurrently
and which study-units are prerequisites or recommended.
Progress. 8. (1) The study-units shall be arranged so that a course of
studies can be completed in three years.
(2) In each year of the course a student shall be required to
register for a number of study-units for which a total of not less
than 10 and not more than 12 credits shall be assigned.
(3) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F indicates
Fail.
(4) A student who registers for a study-unit and does not
complete it shall be considered to have failed that study-unit.B 276
(5) A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit shall
normally be allowed to take one resit only in which case the grade
obtained shall be a D or a Fail. If unsuccessful in the resit he shall
be allowed to repeat the study-unit once, in which case his
assessment shall be graded either as a D or as a Fail. There shall be
no resit when a study-unit is repeated.
(6) Study-units shall be offered at different levels. Basic units
shall be offered at Level 1, while more advanced units shall be
offered at Level 2.
(7) A student who gets fewer than 8 credits in any year of the
course shall not be allowed to continue the course or to take the
final examinations, except in special circumstances and with the
approval of Senate.
(8) A student may not take a study-unit for which he does not

have the prerequisites, or without taking the concurrent study-units
indicated, except with the permission of the Board.
Project / long 
essay.
9. (1) During the second part of the course each student shall
be assigned a project or a long essay.
(2) The nature of the project / long essay shall be essentially
an investigation into a particular issue related to the area of study
and is to be carried out under tutorial supervision.
(3) The project / long essay must be submitted for examination
two months prior to the end of the final examinations.
Final 
examinations.
10. (1) On completing the course of studies a student shall be
required to sit for the final examinations.
(2) Final examinations shall be held once annually, normally
in June, and shall consist of two papers. A  viva voce  examination
may also be held.
(3) A student shall not be allowed to sit for the final
examinations unless he has obtained all the credits assigned to the
practical placements.
(4) For the purpose of regulation 8(8) credits shall be awarded
provisionally to a student for those study-units which end just
before the final examinations he is taking, provided the student’s
performance during the study-unit is considered satisfactory.
Final results.
performance in the final examinations, the marks obtained for the
project / long essay, as well as the credits and grades obtained
during his course of studies.
(2) Saving the provisions of regulation 12, a student shall not
qualify for the Diploma if he does not pass the final examinations
in one session.
(3) The final examinations shall carry forty per cent of the
weighting for the final result. The project / long essay shall carry
twenty per cent of the weighting for the final result. The study-
units shall carry the remaining forty per cent.
(4) In the final results the names of students who qualify for
the Diploma shall be published in alphabetical order in the
categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
Resit.
by the Board to resit the whole final examinations once under such
conditions as the Board may in each case determine. If successful,
such a student shall be placed in the Pass category in the final
results.
Transitory 
provision.
13. Students who followed courses for the Diploma in Applied
Social Studies run by the Faculty of Arts shall be allowed to
transfer to the course of studies covered by these regulations.
