IN EUROPEAN STUDIES DEGREE COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) - B.A. (Hons) - in European Studies Degree Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the European Documentation
and Research Centre;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) -
B.A. (Hons) - in European Studies.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable from May 2000
onwards.
Eligibility for the 
Degree.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Degree a student shall
have:
( a ) completed the appropriate course of studies;
( b ) been successful in the relevant examinations; and
( c ) satisfied all other requirements prescribed in these or
any other relevant statutes and regulations.
Admission 
requirements.
4. (1) A candidate may be registered for the course if he has:
( a ) been registered as a regular student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) obtained a Grade B or better in the overall assessment
in European Studies taken in Part One of the B.A. in
European Studies course in terms of the regulations
relevant to that course; and
( c ) obtained a Grade D or better in the overall assessment
of all the other areas of study of Part One of the B.A.
in European Studies course.
(2) A student may be allowed to re-register and proceed
provisionally to a course of studies leading to the Degree if he
satisfies subregulation (1) but still lacks not more than four of the
required credits, or not more than six if he has been on a long term
study visit abroad, at another institution of tertiary education,
provided that the visit is officially recognised by the Board and he
obtains the required credits before taking the final examinations.

(3) A student shall normally be required to proceed
immediately, after re-registration, from Part One of the B.A. course
in European Studies and in no case shall he be admitted to the
course if more than three years have elapsed after the completion of
Part One of the B.A. course in European Studies, except with the
permission of Senate.
Course of studies. 5. (1) The course shall normally extend over a period of two
academic years.
(2) A student may not take the final examinations earlier than
two academic years or later than three academic years from his first
admission to the course except with the permission of Senate.
(3) The course of studies shall consist of a number of study-
units to which not less than 44 credits shall be assigned.
(4) Such credits shall consist of:
24 credits in European Studies;
6 credits in a European Language or in European Studies;
6 optional credits;
8 credits for a dissertation.
(5) Students shall be encouraged to gain proficiency in an
additional European language of their choice other than in those in
which they are already fluent but preferably in French, unless they
have chosen such a European language as another main or
secondary area of studies, in which case this requirement shall be
waived. If the Board makes the necessary arrangements with the
department concerned, six credits shall be allocated for language
profiency. Otherwise students are to obtain an additional six credits
in European Studies.
(6) A study-unit may include, or altogether consist of, guided
fieldwork in those areas of study where it is appropriate. A student
taking such a study-unit shall be required to submit a written report
on the fieldwork carried out.
(7) Before the start of each academic year a catalogue of
study-units and of the credits assigned to each study-unit shall be
published by the Board.
(8) The catalogue shall furnish details of the study-units in
European Studies.
(9) A credit certificate shall be issued to a student on the
successful completion of a study-unit. The certificate shall also
show a grade indicating the standard attained by the student in the
work done throughout the study-unit and in a test or assignment set
at the end of it. The method of assessment shall be at the discretion
of the Board of Studies appointed by the Board. No credit shall be
given for an uncompleted study-unit.
(10) Notwithstanding subregulation (1), a student may be
allowed to register as a part-time student, with the approval of the
Board. He may not take the final examinations earlier than four
academic years or later than six from his first admission to the
course of studies, except with the permission of Senate and with the

necessary modification of the relevant conditions.
(11) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C and D. F indicates Fail and I
indicates Incomplete.
(12) A study-unit may be graded either by a test or by the
presentation of a research paper or both. In the latter case, the
weighting of the research paper shall be 30 per cent and that of the
test shall be 70 per cent.
(13) A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit by
failing to get a pass mark in the test or research paper or overall if
both are used as a method of assessment, shall be normally allowed
to take a resit only and. if necessary, follow the study-unit again
only once. In this case the assessment shall be graded either as a D
or Fail.

examinations.

6. (1) A student shall be required to sit the final examinations
at the end of the course of studies on successful completion of at
least thirty study-units within the prescribed time.
(2) On completing the course of studies the student shall
register for the final examinations by the end of March.
(3) For those study-units which end just before the final
examinations, credits shall be awarded to a student on the basis of
his performance during the study-units.
(4) The overall assessment of a student for the Degree shall
take into account his performance in the final examinations as well
as the grades obtained during the course of studies. The student
shall not be awarded the Degree unless he obtains at least Pass in
the final examinations.
(5) The final examinations shall carry fifty per cent of the
weighing for the grading of the final result. The other fifty per cent
shall be calculated on the basis of the overall average of the credits
obtained during the course.
(6) In the final examinations four three-hour papers shall be
set in the area of study. A  viva voce  examination may also be held.
(7) In each year there shall be only one session of the final
examinations, normally held in dune and a supplementary session
in September.
(8) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Degree shall be published in alphabetical order in a list divided
into:
First Class Honours
Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
Third Class Honours.
(9) A list shall also be published of such students who, though
not judged worthy of an Honours Degree, are considered by the
examiners as being of sufficient merit to be awarded a pass degree
(B.A.).

(10) A student who fails in one or more papers of the final
examinations shall be allowed to resit the failed paper/e once in the
supplementary session, in which case the maximum grade that can
be awarded shall be grade D.
(11) A student who fails the supplementary session may be
allowed by the Board to retake the final examinations of the course
in the following session under such conditions as the Board may
determine.
Transitory 
provision.
7. Students who have registered for the course leading to the
degree of B.A in the faculty of Arts with International Relations as
a principal area of study and who have completed Part One of that
course may be allowed to transfer to Part Two of the course.
