CERTIFICATE IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS 
A FOREIGN LANGUAGE - CERT. TEFL - COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 95 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Certificate in the
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language - Cert. TEFL - Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the Certificate" means the Certificate in the Teaching of English
as a Foreign Language - Cert. TEFL; and
"the course" means the course leading to the Certificate in the
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language - Cert. TEFL.
Applicability.
October 1997 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate, a student
must:
( a ) be registered as a student on the course;
( b ) complete the course of studies, pass the final
examinations and satisfy any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the University.
Requirements for 
admission.
4. (1) Candidates may be registered in the course if they are
in possession of a pass at Advanced Level in English at Grade C or
better, or equivalent.
(2) Candidates may be asked to provide evidence of their
proficiency in the English language.
Course duration.
Students must complete the course in not less than two semesters
and not more than two years. In special circumstances, the Board
may allow students a further year of studies to complete the course.
Course 
programme.
6. (1) The course programme shall consist of:
( a ) fifteen study-units, to each of which a credit shall be
assigned, in the following areas of study:

Foreign Language;
Approaches to the Teaching of English as a
Foreign Language;
Materials Design and Development in the
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language;
( b ) a Teaching Practice to be carried out in an approved
language school or an English for Specific Purposes
teaching situation; and
( c ) a Long Essay / Project.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, indicating the credits assigned
to each and which study-units are compulsory, shall be published
before the commencement of the course.
Assessment. 7. (1) Students shall be assessed in the study-units in
accordance with criteria established by the Board of Studies.
(2) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they:
( a ) obtain a minimum of twelve credits;
( b ) obtain a pass in the Teaching Practice;
( c ) complete successfully the Long Essay / Project; and
( d ) are successful in the Final Examinations.
(3) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be
allowed a re-assessment once only. If successful, the maximum
grade that may be awarded shall be grade D. In the case of failure
in the practical studyunits, students shall be required to repeat the
study-units.
Teaching Practice. 8. (1) The Teaching Practice shall extend over four/five
weeks and shall take place in an approved language school or an
English for Specific Purposes teaching situation.
(2) The Teaching Practice shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail
basis.
(3) Students who fail in the Teaching Practice shall be allowed
to repeat the Teaching Practice once, within a period of twelve
months from the last day of the Final Examinations. In the case of
failure in the repeated Teaching Practice, students shall be required
to withdraw from the course.
Long Essay / 
Project.
9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of
not less than three thousand words, or a Project deemed to be of
equivalent academic standard by not later than the last day of the
Final Examinations.
(2) The subject of the Long Essay / Project shall be submitted
for approval by the Board of Studies, by not later than two months
before the Final Examinations.
(3) Students who fail to satisfy the examiners in the Long
Essay / Project shall be allowed to re-submit it once within a period
of six months.
Final 
Examinations.
10. (1) The Final Examinations shall consist of two synoptic
written papers.

(2) Students who fail in any or both of the examination papers
shall be allowed to re-sit the failed paper/s once within a period of
not more than six months from the date of the publication of
results. The maximum grade that may be awarded after such a
supplementary session shall be grade D.
Final result.
his performance in the study-units, the Teaching Practice, the Long
Essay / Project and the Final Examinations.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order
classified as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
