BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND 
ACCOUNTANCY

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Faculty of Economics,
Management and Accountancy.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics,
Management and Accountancy;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Degree of
Master of Philosophy- M.Phil.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy -
M.Phil.

3. (1) The course shall be open to candidates who graduated
with Honours in the proposed subject as main area of study and
who placed in the upper half of the classification in the final
examinations of the University of Malta or another university
recognised for this purpose by the Senate.
(2) The proposed subject shall be in one of the following main
areas of study Economics, Management, Accountancy, Public
Policy, Banking and Finance and Marketing or any other area
approved by Senate for this purpose on the recommendation of the
Board.

4. (1) An application shall include evidence of proficiency
and a recommendation by the Head of Department concerned and
by a member of the academic staff willing to act as supervisor. The
Board may lay down additional requirements including the taking
of one or more qualifying examinations.
(2) The Board may, in special cases, allow candidates, who do
not satisfy the requirements specified in Bye-Law 3 above, to
register in terms of regulation 5(2) of the Ph.D. and M.Phil.
Regulations.
(3) The application for registration shall include the title of the
proposed dissertation and a brief account of it.

Format and 
presentation of 
dissertation.
5. (1) The length of the dissertation shall not normally exceed
50,000 words unless otherwise specified by the department
concerned.
(2) A student shall be required to submit three copies of the
dissertation for examination which shall be adequately bound. Each
copy shall contain an abstract of not more than 300 words.
(3) The graduate shall within one month of passing the
examination of the dissertation submit three final copies of the
dissertation one of which shall be deposited at the University
Library. These final copies shall incorporate any amendments
requested by the examiners during the oral examination.
(4) The dissertation shall comply with the format and
presentation rules for dissertations approved by the Board.
