DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN 
EDUCATION - DIP.I.T.ED. - COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 195 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Information Technology in Education - Dip. I.T. Ed. - Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in
Information Technology in Education - Dip. I.T. Ed.; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Information Technology in
Education - Dip. I.T. Ed.
Applicability.
1998 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, a student
must:
( a ) be registered as a regular student in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the course of studies, pass the
Part II examination and satisfy any other requirements
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Special course 
requirements and 
selection of 
applicants.
4. (1) Applicants may be registered for the course according
to the provisions of these regulations, if they:
( a ) are in possession of a teaching qualification
recognised by the Board;
( b ) have a minimum of one year’s teaching experience;
and
( c ) are serving teachers in a recognised school.
(2) The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of
applicants that may be allowed to register for the course, depending
on the availability of resources. The number of available places
shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.

(3) If there are more eligible applicants than the number of
places available, applicants shall be selected after an interview by
the Board of Studies. The Board of Studies shall take into
consideration the following criteria which shall be weighted as
indicated below:
( a ) professional knowledge and aptitude 20%
( b ) knowledge of Information Technology 30%
( c ) use of Information Technology in Education 30%
( d ) personality 20%.
Course duration. 5. (1) The course shall extend over two years of part-time
study. In special circumstances the Board may allow a student to
complete the course in a maximum of three years.
(2) The course shall be organised in two parts, each part
extending over a period of one year of part-time study.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course of studies shall consist of:
( a ) study-units to which a total of twenty-four credits shall
be assigned, in the following areas of study:
Basic Information Technology Knowledge and
Skills
Personal and Professional Use of Information
Technology
Theoretical Trends and Issues in Information
Technology in Education;
( b ) a Practical Placement period in each year of the
course; and
( c ) a Long Essay/Project.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, with the credits assigned to
each, shall be published before the commencement of the course.
Part I of the course. 7. (1) Part I shall extend over the first year of the course.
(2) Part I shall consist of study-units to which a total of twelve
credits shall be assigned and the Part I Practical Placement.
(3) The study-units shall be offered in the following areas of
study:
Basic Information Technology Knowledge and Skills
Personal and Professional Use of Information
Technology
Theoretical Trends and Issues in Information
Technology in Education.
Part II of the 
course.
8. (1) Part II shall extend over the second year of the course.
(2) Part II shall consist of study-units to which a total of
twelve credits shall be assigned, the Part II Practical Placement,
and a Long Essay/Project.
(3) The study-units shall be offered in the following areas of
study:

Technology
Theoretical Trends and Issues in Information
Technology in Education.
(4) Students may be allowed to register for Part II of the
course if they have successfully completed Part I of the course.
(5) The Board may allow other applicants to register for Part II
of the course if they have obtained from the University of Malta or
another university a qualification equivalent to Part I of the course,
provided that the Board may require such applicants to successfully
complete particular study-units from Part I and/or the Part I
Practical Placement.
Assessment.
assessment criteria of Part I of the course if they:
( a ) obtain a minimum of ten credits;
( b ) obtain a Pass in the Part I Practical Placement; and
( c ) are successful in the Part I examination.
(2) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of Part II of the course if they:
( a ) obtain a minimum of ten credits;
( b ) obtain a Pass in the Part II Practical Placement;
( c ) complete successfully the Long Essay/Project; and
( d ) are successful in the Part II examination.
(3) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be
allowed one re-assessment only. If successful, the maximum grade
that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(4) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit. A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+ and D. F
indicates Fail and I indicates Incomplete.
Part I and Part II 
Practical 
Placements.
10. (1) The Part I and the Part II Practical Placements shall
each extend over six weeks and each shall take place in the school
where the students are posted.
(2) The Part I and the Part II Practical Placements shall be
assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.
(3) Students who fail the Part I Practical Placement shall be
allowed to repeat it once within a period of twelve months from the
last day of the Part I examination.
(4) Students who fail the Part II Practical Placement shall be
allowed to repeat it once within a period of twelve months from the
last day of the Part II examination.
Long Essay/
Project.
11. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of
not less than eight thousand and not more than ten thousand words,
or a Project deemed to be of equivalent academic standard by the
Board of Studies, by not later than two months after the last day of
the Part II examination.
(2) The subject of the Long Essay/Project shall be submitted

for approval of the Board of Studies by not later than one month
before the first day of the Part II examination.
(3) Students who fail the Long Essay/Project shall be allowed
to resubmit it once within a period of six months.
Part I and Part II 
examinations.
12. (1) The Part I examination shall consist of two papers
based on Part I of the course.
(2) The Part II examination shall consist of two synoptic
papers based on Part II of the course.
(3) Students who fail in any or both of the papers in the Part I
or the Part II examinations shall be allowed to re-sit the failed
paper/s once only within a period of three months. The maximum
grade that may be awarded after such a supplementary session shall
be grade D.
Final result. 13. (1) The final result shall take into account the students’
performance in the study-units, the Long Essay/Project and the Part
II examination.
(2) The Part II examination shall carry 30% of the weighting
for the grading of the final result. The other 70% shall be calculated
on the basis of the overall average result of the twenty-four credits
obtained during the course.
(3) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
