DIPLOMA IN APPLIED SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 181 of 1990.
Citation.
Social Studies Course Regulations, and these regulations are
applicable to courses starting in October 1987 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma in 
Applied Social 
Studies.
1.1 To be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Applied
Social Studies a candidate must have:
(i) registered for and successfully completed a
course of studies in Social Work, or any other
approved area, as provided in these regulations;
(ii) passed the Final examinations for the Diploma;
(iii) satisfied all other requirements laid down in
these regulations and the relative Statutes and
Regulations of the University.
Registration and 
special course 
requirements.
2.1 A candidate may be registered for a course of studies
leading to the Diploma in Applied Social Studies if he is eligible
for admission to the University as a regular student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University.
2.2 A candidate may be registered for a course of studies
leading to the Diploma in Applied Social Studies concurrently with
a course of studies leading to the degree of B.A if he registers for
Social Studies and Psychology as his two principal areas of study.
2.3 Notwithstanding the provisions of regulation 2.1,
university graduates, students over 23 years or other candidates
whose qualifications are considered sufficient by the Faculty
Board, may be exempted from any other requirements for
admission to the course.
Duration of course.
Social Studies normally extends over a period of three years part-
time study.
3.2 A student may not take the Final examination earlier than
three years after admission to the course of studies.
3.3 The Faculty Board may allow a student, for good and
sufficient reason, to extend his studies over a maximum of five
years, under such conditions as the Faculty Board may in each case
determine.
Course of studies.
Studies consists of study-units for which not less than 30 credits
are assigned.
Catalogue of 
study-units.
5.1 Before the start of each academic year, following its
approval by Senate, a catalogue of study-units and of credits

assigned to each study-unit will be published by the Faculty Board.
5.2 The catalogue will give details of the study-units. A study-
unit may include, or altogether consist of, guided fieldwork where
appropriate. A student taking such a unit may be required to write
written reports on the fieldwork carried out.
5.3 The catalogue will also include the method of assessment
for each study-unit, which study-units should be taken concurrently
and which study-units are prerequisites or recommended.
Progress. 6.1 The study-units are arranged so that a course of studies can
be completed in three years.
6.2 In each year of the course a student is required to register
for a number of study-units for which a total of not less than 10 and
not more than 12 credits are assigned.
6.3 Credits are assigned according to the following grades in
descending order of merit: A, B. C, D and F. where F indicates Fail.
6.3.1 A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit is
normally allowed to take one resit only and, if necessary, follow
the study-unit again only once, in which case his assessment will be
graded either as a ‘D’ or as a ‘Fail’.
6.4 The choice of study-unit require the approval of the
Faculty Board where a study-unit is sequential.
6.5 Study-units will be offered at different levels. Basic units
will be given at Level 1, while more advanced units will be offered
at Levels 2 or 3.
6.6 A student who gets fewer than 7 credits in each of two
years of the course will not be allowed to continue the course or to
take the Final examinations, except in special circumstances and
with the approval of Senate.
6.7 A student may not take a study-unit for which he does not
have the prerequisites, or without taking the advised concurrent
study-units, except with the permission of the Faculty Board.
Dissertation. 7.1 During the second part of the course, each student will be
required to write a dissertation, the subject of which must be
approved by the Faculty Board.
7.2 The nature of the dissertation is essentially an investigation
into a particular problem in an area related to the candidate’s
specialisation carried out under tutorial supervision.
7.3 The dissertation must be submitted for examination two
months prior to the end of the final comprehensive examination.
Final 
examinations.
8.1 Final examinations will be held once annually, normally in
May-June, and will consist of two papers. A viva voce examination
may also be held.
8.2 On completing a course of studies a student is required to
sit for the Final examination.
8.3 For the purpose of regulation 6.6, credits will be awarded
provisionally to a student for those study-units which end just
before the Final examination he is taking, provided the student’s

performance during the study-unit is considered satisfactory.
Final results.
performance of the candidate in the Final examinations, the marks
obtained for the dissertation, as well as the credits and grades
obtained during his course of studies.
9.2 The student will not qualify for the Diploma if he does not
pass the Final examinations in one session.
9.3 The Final examinations carry forty per cent of the
weighting for the final result. The dissertation carries twenty per
cent of the weighting of the final result. The study-units carry the
remaining forty per cent. If more than 30 credits are obtained by a
student, the best 30 credits satisfying regulation 4.2 will be taken
into account.
9.4 In the Final results the names of candidates who qualify for
the Diploma in Applied Social Studies are published in alphabetical
order in the following categories: Distinction, Merit, Credit, Pass.
Resit.
fails the Final examinations may be allowed by the Faculty Board
to resit the whole Final examinations once under such conditions as
the Board may in each case determine. If successful, such a student
will be placed in the Pass category in the Final results.
