BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - AT THE INSTITUTE FOR 
MASONRY AND CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - at the Institute for Masonry and
Construction Research.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute for Masonry and
Construction Research;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy -
M.Phil.; and
"the Institute" means the Institute for Masonry and Construction
Research.

3. To register for the Degree, candidates must be in
possession of an Honours degree not below Second Class (Upper)
in a field related to masonry and related areas of construction. The
degrees considered appropriate shall normally be the Bachelor of
Engineering and Architecture (Honours), the Bachelor of
Engineering (Honours) and the Bachelor of Science.

applicants must provide evidence that they have attained the level
of proficiency stipulated in bye-law 3, particularly in the area of
research proposed and must include a recommendation by a
member of the academic staff willing to act as supervisor. The
Board may, in each case, lay down additional requirements,
including the taking of one or more qualifying examinations.
Recommendations.
shall submit to the Board his recommendation regarding the
feasibility of the proposed research work and regarding the
resources required for the carrying out of such research. The
recommendation shall include a reference to the person directly
concerned with the management of t.he facilities required for the
research work.

6. Students shall be required to register every twelve months,
on the written recommendation of their supervisor.

staff of the University of Malta, except that the Board shall not
normally nominate as supervisor someone who does not have
academic qualifications of a level higher than Master of
Philosophy.
Dissertation format 
and presentation.
8. The dissertation shall not normally be less than 35,000
words and shall not exceed 40,000 words, exclusive of appendices,
bibliographies, glossaries and footnotes.
Copies. 9. Students shall be required to submit three copies of the
dissertation, either typewritten or printed, and adequately bound for
the purpose of the oral examination. They shall be required to bring
to the oral examination a fourth copy of the dissertation, similarly
bound and paginated.
Hard bound copies. 10. ( a ) After the oral examination, and after incorporating any
amendments the Board of Examiners may require,
students shall submit two copies hard bound in art
vellum or cloth, dark maroon in colour, and lettered
boldly in gold up back indicating the degree, the date
and the name of the student, and on the front the title
of the work. The letters shall be between 12mm and
30mm high.
( b ) The text must be typed or printed on A4 sheets, on one
side only, in double spacing, and with a margin of
40mm to the left, and at least 20mm top, bottom and
right.
( c ) Drawings, maps and other illustrations, which are
unavoidably larger than A4, shall be properly folded to
A4 size so that they can be neatly bound within the
dissertation.
( d ) Students shall also be required to present a short
abstract of their dissertation of not more than 500
words which shall be bound with each copy of the
dissertation submitted to the University. One of these
copies shall be deposited in the Library of the
University of Malta, and the other in the library of the
Institute.
