POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN BASIC 
CLINICAL PSYCHIATRY COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postgraduate
Certificate in Basic Clinical Psychiatry Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and
Surgery;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course leading to the Postgraduate
Certificate; and
"the Postgraduate Certificate" means the Postgraduate Certificate
in Basic Clinical Psychiatry.
Applicability.
October 2000 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Postgraduate 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate
Certificate, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) satisfy the requirements for admission in accordance
with regulation 4;
( c ) complete the course of studies, obtain at least 16
credits (including the credits for the case studies, the
log book and the audit project), and satisfy any other
requirements as prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Requirements for 
admission.
4. Applicants may be registered for the course if they are in
possession either of the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery
of the University of Malta or of a qualification considered to be
equivalent by the Senate, and they are employed as Senior House
Officers in the Department of Psychiatry of the Health Division of
the Ministry of Health at the time of the commencement of the
Course.

course.
5. Applicants shall apply for the course on the prescribed
form and within the time specified by the Office of the Registrar.
Duration of the 
course.
6. The course shall extend over one year of study on a part-
time basis.

Course of studies 
and assessment.
7. The course of studies shall consist of a theoretical study-
unit, case studies, a log book and an audit project, and clinical
practice.
Theoretical study-
unit.
8. (1) The theoretical study-unit shall consist of lectures and
private study to cover the following topics:
Sciences basic to Psychiatry
Diagnostic and Clinical Syndromes
Therapeutic Skills.
(2) On completion of this study-unit, students shall be required
to sit for two written examination papers. Students who obtain a
pass in both papers shall be awarded 8 credits.
Case studies. 9. (1) Students shall be required to write a number of case
studies and to draw up a log book and an audit project, under the
direction of a supervisor appointed by the Board of Studies. The
case studies, the log hook and the audit project shall be submitted
by mid June.
(2) Students shall be required to defend the case studies, the
log book and the audit project during a  viva voce  examination.
Students who are successful in the  viva voce  examination shall be
awarded 4 credits.
Clinical practice. 10. During the course students shall be required to undergo
clinical practice, which shall be examined through a clinical
examination at the end of the course. Students who are successful
in this examination shall be awarded 4 credits.
Results of 
assessment.
11. The results of the assessment of the components of the
course indicated in regulations 8, 9 and 10 shall be published
according to the following grading scheme, in descending order of
merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+ and D. F indicates Fail.
Supplementary 
examination.
12. Students who fail in the examinations of the theoretical
study-unit or in the clinical examination shall be allowed a
supplementary examination only once at the next scheduled session
of examinations. If successful, the maximum grade that may be
awarded shall be grade D.
Students whose 
case studies, etc., 
are not approved.
13. Students whose case studies, log book and audit project are
not approved shall be considered to have definitely failed the
course.
Course catalogue. 14. A catalogue giving details of the components of the course
shall be published before the commencement of the course,
following approval by Senate on the recommendation of the Board:
Final result. 15. (1) The final result shall take into account the
performance of the students in all components of the course, which
shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to
each.
(2) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
Post.graduate Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical
order classified as follows:
