DIPLOMA IN OPERATIONAL ISLAND 
HYDROLOGY COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Operational Island Hydrology Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Diploma
in Operational Island Hydrology; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Operational Island
Hydrology.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in
February 2001 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the course of studies, to which
25 credits are assigned, including those for the field
experience and the long essay/project, pass in the final
examination and satisfy any other requirements
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Registration for the 
course.
4. Applicants shall apply to register for the course on the
prescribed form and within the time specified by the Office of the
Registrar.
Course duration.

the Board may allow students to complete the course in a maximum
of three years of part-time study.
Course of studies.
( a ) study-units, to which a total of 19 credits shall be
assigned, divided in the following categories:
Part I: Foundation
Part II: Intermediate
Part III: Final

( b ) a field experience (4 credits); and
( c ) a long essay/project (2 credits).
(2) A catalogue of study-units, indicating the code, title,
description, credits assigned to each study-unit, any pre-requisites
and methods of teaching and assessment shall be published before
the commencement of the course, following approval by Senate on
the recommendation of the Board. Study-units may include
lectures, seminars, laboratory practical sessions, site visits or
combinations of these, as indicated in the catalogue.
Assessment and 
examinations.
7. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A, B, C, and D. Failure shall
be indicated by F. Incomplete mark due to justifiable reasons
(illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated by I. In all other
cases, the results of uncompleted study-units shall be indicated as
F.
(2) Students who fail any study-unit shall be allowed to re-
submit their assignment/s or resit the test/s once at the next
examination session. If successful, the maximum grade that may be
awarded shall be grade D.
(3) Students who fail their re-assessment shall be required to
withdraw from the course.
Field experience. 8. (1) Students shall be required to undergo a field experience
under tutorial supervision as determined by the Board of Studies.
During this period students are encouraged to apply theory to
practice.
(2) The Board of Studies, taking into consideration the reports
of the heads of the sections where the students are posted and of the
supervisors, shall assess the field experience on a Pass/Fail basis.
Students may be required to attend for an interview. Students who
fail in the field experience shall be required to withdraw from the
course.
Long essay/
project.

9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay of not
less than 8,000 and not more than 10,000 words, or a project
deemed to be of equivalent academic standard by the Board of
Studies, by the date established by the Board of Studies.
(2) The proposal for the long essay/project shall be submitted
for approval of the Board of Studies by not later than one week
after notification of successful completion of the field experience.
(3) The long essay/project shall be assessed by a supervisor
and an assessor as appointed by the Board of Studies.
(4) Students who fail the long essay/project shall be allowed to
re-submit it once within a period of six months. If successful, the
maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
Attendance. 10. Regular attendance for all components of the course is
obligatory. In the case of absence for a reason the Board of Studies
considers valid, it may allow students to proceed with the course,
provided that alternative arrangements are made to make up for the
missed lectures or field experience.
Final examination. 11. (1) Students who have obtained a minimum of 23 credits,

including those for the field experience, shall be allowed to sit for
the final examination, which shall consist of three written papers.
(2) Students who fail in any of the papers of the final
examination shall be allowed to re-sit the failed paper/s only once
within a period of three months from the publication of the final
results. The maximum grade that may be awarded in the
supplementary examination shall be grade D.
Final result.
performance in the study-units and in the long essay/project, in the
field experience, and in the final examination, according to the
following weighting:
all study-units and the long essay/project 40%
field experience 30%
final examination 30%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
