LEGAL NOTICE 305 of 2001.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor in
Conservation and Restoration Studies (Honours) - B.Cons. (Hons) -
Degree Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Academic Board" means the Academic Board of the
Institute for Conservation and Restoration Studies of the Malta
Centre for Restoration;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies for the course
appointed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Academic
Board;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Degree of
Bachelor in Conservation and Restoration Studies (Honours) - B.
Cons. (Hons);
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor in Conservation and
Restoration Studies (Honours) - B. Cons. (Hons);
"the Institute" means the Institute for Conservation and
Restoration Studies of the Malta Centre for Restoration; and
"the Senate" means the Senate of the University of Malta.
Applicability.
onwards, provided that students admitted to the course by the
Institute since October 1999 shall be admitted to the course in
terms of regulations 8.1 and 8.1.1 of the Admission Regulations.
Eligibility for the 
Degree.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Degree, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University and
satisfy the special course requirements stipulated in
regulation 5;
( b ) complete the appropriate course of studies, obtain all
the credits indicated in regulation 11, pass the synoptic
examination and satisfy any other requirements
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Admission and 
special course 
requirements.
4. Applicants shall apply t.o register for the course on the
prescribed form and within the time specified by the Office of the

Registrar. Applicants shall be required to indicate their choice of
one of the areas of study indicated in regulation 8.
Requirements for 
admission.
5. ( a ) Besides satisfying the general entry requirements for
admission to the University, applicants must be in
possession of:
(i) in 2002: passes in the Secondary Education
Certificate Examination at grade 5 or better in
one of the following subjects: Art, Chemistry,
Environmental Studies, History;
(ii) from 2003 onwards: a pass at Advanced Level in
the Matriculation Certificate Examination in
Chemistry at grade D or better; and
( b ) pass an entrance examination organised by the
Institute, which shall be designed to test the manual
and intellectual aptitude of applicants and, in
particular, their ability to pursue the area of study of
their choice with profit.
Number of 
applicants and 
places.
6. (1) The Academic Board shall recommend to Senate the
area/s of study to be offered each year and the number of applicants
that may be allowed to register for each area of study in the course,
depending on the availability of resources. The number of available
places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
(2) If there are more eligible applicants than the number of
places available, applicants shall be selected on their performance
in the entrance examination. The Institute shall not be bound to fill
all the places announced, if, after the results of the entrance
examination, not enough eligible applicants are found to fill all the
places.
Entrance 
examination.
7. (1) All applicants shall be required to sit for the entrance
examination which shall be held annually or on such dates as may
be determined by the Academic Board on the advice of the Board
of Studies.
(2) The entrance examination shall normally consist of a line
drawing test and a manual dexterity test and an academic aptitude
test consisting of written and oral examinations. In order to be
successful, applicants are expected to pass in all the components of
the entrance examination, which shall be assigned equal weighting.
Questions shall be set and must be answered in English.
(3) The entrance examination papers shall be set by examiners
appointed by the Board of Studies.
Areas of study. 8. (1) Subject to the provisions of regulation 6, the following
areas of study are normally offered in the course:
Area of Study A - Paintings and Polychrome Sculpture
Area of Study B - Ceramics, Glass, Metals and Stone
Area of Study C - Textiles
Area of Study D - Books and Paper.

(2) Students shall be required to choose one of these areas of
study.
(3) These areas of study shall be offered depending on the
availability of resources and provided that there is a sufficient
number of qualified applicants.
Duration of the 
course.
9. (1) The course shall extend over a period of four years of
full-time studies. The Board of Studies may allow students to
complete the course in one addit.ional year of studies under those
conditions it may impose.
(2) In special circumstances, Senate may allow students a
further extension of one year, on the recommendation of the Board
of Studies.
(3) The Senate, acting on the advice of the Board of Studies,
may allow students, for a good and sufficient reason, to suspend
their studies for a maximum of twelve months.
Registration for the 
course.
10. (1) Students shall be required to register before the
beginning of each year within the period stipulated by the Office of
the Registrar.
(2) Students are expected to inform the Registrar in writing if
they resign from the course, indicating the date of their resignation.
Course of studies.
components, to which a total of 120 credits are assigned:
( a ) study-units, to which 113 credits are assigned; and
(b) a dissertation, to which 7 credits are assigned.
Dissertation.
to submit a dissertation, which shall include a practical part, of
between 10,000 and 12,000 words on a subject approved by the
Board of Studies.
(2) The dissertation shall be graded according to the grading
scheme outlined in regulation 14.
Catalogue of 
study-units.
13. The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-
units for each area of study. The catalogue shall indicate the level,
code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits
assigned to each study-unit, which study-units are compulsory,
concurrent or pre-requisite for other study-units, and the methods
of teaching and assessment. The Board of Studies shall publish the
catalogue prior to the commencement of each course, following the
approval of Senate.
Progress and 
assessment.
14. Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+ and D.
Failure shall be indicated by F. Incomplete work due to justifiable
reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated by I. In
all other cases the results of uncompleted study-units shall be
indicated as F. The grades awarded shall take into account the
students’ performance in one or more of the following elements, as
deemed appropriate by the Board of Studies: coursework,
fieldwork, practical, written and/or oral assessments.

Compulsory study-
units.
15. (1) In order to proceed to the next year of the course,
students must obtain 30 credits, including those for study-units
which are designated as compulsory by the Board of Studies. All
practical study-units are designated as compulsory.
(2) Students who do not obtain the required 30 credits to
proceed to the next year of the course shall be required to repeat the
year of study when it is next available.
(3) During a repeat year, students must follow the study-units
as directed by the Board of Studies. Where the Board of Studies
directs students to re-do study-units for which credit has already
been obtained during the failed year, the grade obtained during the
repeat year shall be utilised for final classification purposes.
(4) If unsuccessful in a repeat year, such students shall not be
allowed to proceed with the course.
Fieldwork. 16. In Years Two and Three students shall be required to
undertake fieldwork in their area of study during July and
September. Five credits shall be assigned per fieldwork session.
Supplementary 
examinations.
17. (1) Supplementary examinations of study-units are
normally held in September, except that the supplementary
examinations of study-units held during the first semester may be
held at the end of the second semester. In the case of assignments,
the supplementary assessment shall be made by arrangement with
the lecturer concerned. In any supplementary assessment, the
maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(2) There shall be no supplementary assessment for practical
study-units. Students who fail in practical study-units shall be
required to repeat the year under those conditions that the Board of
Studies may impose, and provided this is allowed by the provisions
of regulation 9.
(3) Students shall not be allowed to be re-assessed for a study-
unit if they have already been awarded credit for it, unless they are
required to re-do a study-unit during a repeat year.
Transfer of credits. 18. The Board of Studies may allow students to transfer credits
obtained for study-units in a course of studies at the University of
Malta or at an educational institution recognised for the purpose by
the Senate, provided that such study-units are comparable in
content and level to the ones offered in the course. Not more than
one-half of the number of credits required for the award of the
Degree may be transferred.
Synoptic 
examination.
19. Students shall be eligible to sit for the Synoptic
examination if they have completed the study-units and dissertation
to which 120 credits are assigned, including all compulsory study-
units, provided that study-units taken during the last semester of
the final year shall be deemed to have been completed if students
have registered for them, have maintained satisfactory attendance,
and have undertaken all assessments associated with them.
Examination to be 
held in June.
20. The synoptic examination shall be held in June of the final
year and shall consist of three three-hour written papers. A  viva

voce  examination may also be held.
Supplementary 
session of the 
synoptic 
examination.
21. (1) Students who fail in the synoptic examination shall be
required to resit all the papers of the synoptic examination in the
September supplementary session. If successful, the maximum
grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(2) In the case of failure in the supplementary session of the
synoptic examination, students shall be required to repeat the year
under those conditions that the Board of Studies may impose.
(3) If, after repeating the final year of the course, students still
fail to satisfy the requirements for the award of the Degree as
specified in regulation 3, they shall be considered to have failed the
course unless the Board of Studies, at its discretion and taking into
consideration the students’ overall performance, agree to award a
Pass degree (without Honours).
Final result.
students’ performance in the study-units including the dissertation,
and in the synoptic examination, according to the following
weighting:
Study-units including the dissertation 80%
Synoptic Examination 20%.
(2) For the purpose of subregulation (1) the weighting for the
study-units shall be calculated on the basis of an overall average of
the credits obtained.
(3) The names of students who have qualified for the award of
the Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order as
follows:
First Class Honours
Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
Third Class Honours
Pass (without Honours).
