DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM - DIP. JOURNALISM - 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Journalism - Dip. Journalism - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Centre for Communication
Technology;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the Centre" means the Centre for Communication Technology;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Journalism - Dip.
Journalism; and
"ECTS" means credits awarded according to the European Credit
Transfer System.
Applicability.
2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the course of studies as
specified in regulation 6 and satisfy any other
requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Registration.
to the provisions of these regulations if they are eligible for
admission to the University as regular students in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University.
(2) Applicants applying for admission in terms of regulation
2(2)( a )(iii) of the Admission Regulations are required to have a
minimum of one year journalistic experience and be currently
working with a publishing establishment. Such applicants shall be
required to attend an interview to ascertain that they will be able to
follow the course with profit.
Course duration.
time study. The Board may allow a student to complete the course
in an additional year of part-time study.

Programme at 
studies.
6. (1) The course shall consist of the following study-units, to
which not less than thirty (sixty ECTS) credits shall be assigned:
Journalism Studies
Media Studies
Complementary study-units
Long Essay, Placement, and Synoptic Study-Units.
(2) The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-
units. The catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and
type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit,
which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for
other study-units, and the methods of teaching and assessment. The
Board shall publish the catalogue for the course prior to its
commencement, following the approval of Senate.
(3) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma,
students shall obtain at least thirty credits (sixty ECTS), including
all the credits for the compulsory study-units.
Assessment. 7. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, and
D. A failure shall be indicated with an "F". Incomplete work due to
justifiable reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be
indicated with an "I". In all other cases the results of uncompleted
study-units shall be indicated as "F".
(2) Students who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a re-
sit in that study-unit once only. The maximum grade that may be
obtained following a resit shall be grade "D".
Long essay. 8. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay of not
less than five thousand and not more than seven thousand words, by
not later than the final day of classes of the last semester of the
course.
(2) Students who fail the long essay shall be allowed to re-
submit it once within a period of six months.
Placement. 9. (1) The placement shall extend over a number of weeks to
be agreed upon by the Board of Studies and the publishing house.
Placements shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.
(2) Students who fail the placement shall be allowed to repeat
it once within a period of six months.
Synoptic study-
units.
10. The synoptic study-units shall normally be conducted
through seminars held during the last semester of the course.
During such seminars students shall be guided to integrate various
components of the study programme as related to the day-to-day
experiences of the profession. Each synoptic study-unit shall be
assessed through a synoptic examination.
Final result. 11. (1) The final result of students shall take into account their
performance in all the components of the course. The final result
shall be based on the following weighting:
Taught Study-Units, Placement and Long Essay 60%
Synoptic Study-Units 40%.

(2) In the final results for the Diploma the names of successful
students shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the
following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
