Engineering and Architecture (Honours) -B.E. & A. (Hons.) -
Degree Course Regulations.
Eligibility for 
Degree.
1. To be eligible for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of
Engineering and Architecture (Honours), a candidate must:
( a ) be registered as a matriculated student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) satisfy the special course requirements in accordance
with regulation 3;
( c ) complete the course of studies, qualify in the
examinations, and satisfy any other requirements
prescribed in these regulations;
( d ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant Statutes and Regulations of the University.
Course duration 
and structure.
2.1. The course of studies leading to the Degree of Bachelor of
Engineering and Architecture (Honours) will be of five years’
duration and each academic year will be divided into two academic
semesters.
2.2  The course will be divided into two parts as follows:
Part 1 will have a duration of six academic semesters,
and will be common to all students.
Part 2 will have a duration of four academic semesters
and will consist of a number of elective streams, of
which each student will select one.
2.3. The Faculty Board reserves the right to limit the number of
streams of study, as the resources of the Faculty dictate.

3. To apply for admission to the course leading to the Degree
of Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Honours) a candidate
must, besides satisfying the conditions for admission as a regular
student in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University,
satisfy the following special course requirements:
( a ) Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in Applied
Mathematics (Mechanics) or Pure Mathematics; and
Physics; and

( b ) an Intermediate Level pass in one of:
Applied Mathematics (if not already offered at
Advanced Level), Art, Chemistry, Computing,
Engineering Drawing and Graphical Communication,
History, Information Technology, Philosophy, Pure
Mathematics (if not already offered at Advanced
Level), Sociology:
Provided that a candidate who is a graduate of a university,
or has other qualifications considered to be sufficient, may be
exempted by the Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty
Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these special
course requirements.
Curriculum. 4.1 The subjects of Part I of the course leading to the degree of
Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Honours) shall be:

and such other subjects that may be determined by Senate on the

advice of the Faculty Board.
4.2. The subjects of Part II of the course shall consist of a group
of compulsory subjects and/or other subjects, forming an elective
stream. The Faculty shall offer at least two such streams, one
predominantly in the field of building and/or civil engineering, and
the other in the field of architecture and/or urban studies. The list
of streams on offer shall be published, at least one year before the
start of the streams. The curriculum for each stream shall be
approved by the Faculty Board at least before the end of the
preceding semester. Each stream shall include the following
compulsory subjects:
Design
Building and Land Economics
Project Management
Building Legislation
Professional Practice
4.3. Each student shall choose one stream, and shall follow all
compulsory subjects, as well as all the subjects prescribed for the
chosen stream. Candidates will also be required to prepare a written
dissertation, and a thesis design project on a theme related to their
stream.
4.4. Notwithstanding the provisions of regulations 4.1 to 4.3
above, the Faculty Board may in Part I or Part II of the course allow
a student to follow a programme of studies in an approved overseas
institution of Higher Education for a period of time not exceeding
one academic semester provided that it is satisfied that the subjects
to be studied are substantially similar to the subjects prescribed for
that same academic semester. With reference to compulsory
subjects prescribed for Part II of the course for which no overseas
equivalent can be established by the Faculty Board, the student
concerned may be requested by the Faculty Board to follow such
additional studies and submit to any assessment as the Faculty
Board may decide.
Assessment.

5.1. At the end of each semester, there may be an assessment in
any or all of the subjects studied in that semester, or, alternatively,
there may be an assessment at the end of the academic year in any
subject studied over the two semesters of that year, as notified by
the Faculty Board at the beginning of each academic year.
5.2 The assessment will take into consideration the candidate’s
performance in coursework assigned during the semester and/or
examinations held.
5.3. The Faculty Board shall recommend to Senate the Boards
of Examiners for each subject of examination and for the
dissertation and the thesis design project in terms of regulation 2 of
the University Examinations Regulations.
5.4 The Faculty Board shall also recommend to Senate a Joint
Board of Assessors composed of all academic members of staff of
the Faculty, under the chairmanship of the Dean, who shall collate
the results of each Board of Examiners and shall assess the overall

performance of each candidate at the end of each year, and, in the
final year, establish the degree classification of each candidate.
During the final year of the course, the external examiner in each
stream shall be an additional member of this Board.
5.5 When the Joint Board of Assessors is not satisfied with the
performance of the candidate in any of the subjects, whether over a
semester or an academic year, it may require the candidate to be re-
assessed through a supplementary examination, and/or a re-
submission of coursework, and/or to satisfy any other conditions as
it may impose.
5.6. If required, there will be assessment sessions in January/
February and in May/June. There will be a re-assessment session in
September.

6.1. A candidate shall not be allowed to proceed to the
following year of the course, if the Joint Board of Assessors is not
satisfied with the performance of that candidate in any academic
year, normally when a candidate fails in any subject of the
examination in a re-assessment session.
6.2. A candidate who is not allowed to proceed to the following
year of the course, under regulation 6.1. above, may be allowed by
the Faculty Board to repeat the relevant year of the course. No
candidate shall be allowed to repeat more than once during the
whole course.
Results and Degree 
classification.
7.1. At the end of each semester of Part I, each student’s
academic performance, in each subject assessed, shall be published,
graded A, B. C, D, or Fail.
7.2. In Part II, each student’s academic performance over each
year shall be consolidated and published as one result graded A, B.
C, D, or Fail. The examinations and coursework over the final two
years shall be moderated by external examiners, appointed on the
advice of the Faculty Board.
7.3. Candidates qualify for the award of the degree on the
successful completion of their final year. The final classification of
the Degree for every successful candidate will be based on the
results obtained in every year of the course. The names of the
candidates who qualify for the award of the B.E. & A. Degree shall
be published in alphabetical order in a list divided into the
categories: First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (Upper
Division), Second Class Honours (Lower Division), Third Class
Honours, or Pass.
7.4. For the purposes of degree classification, the mark carried
over in the case of any re-assessment shall be the minimum mark.
7.5. Candidates who in Part II of the course repeat any year, or
who have been required to re-submit any dissertation or any thesis
design project work, may only qualify for a Pass degree, that is, the
B.E. & A. Degree.

8. These Regulations shall apply to examinations held in June
