SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATE 
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

Citation.
Certificate Examination Regulations.
Applicability.
1996.
General.
Certificate Examination. The First Session shall be held in May and
a Supplementary Session shall be held in September of each year.
(2) This Examination shall also be subject to any other
regulations from time to time in force regarding its conduct and
that of the Matriculation Examination.
Subjects of the 
Examination.
3. (1) In the First Session the subjects shall be the following:
Accounting, Arabic, Art, Biology, Business Studies,
Chemistry, Classical Culture and Civilisation,
Commerce, Computer Studies, Economics, English
Language, Environmental Studies, French, Geography,
German, Greek, History, Home Economics, Italian,
Latin, Maltese, Mathematics, Physics, Religious
Knowledge, Russian, Social Studies, Spanish,
Technical Design and Textiles and Design.
(2) In the Supplementary Session the subjects shall be the
following:
English Language, Maltese, Mathematics and Physics.
Choice of subjects.
in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination and the
Matriculation Certificate Examination at the same session.
(2) A candidate may not take the examination in Business
Studies in the same session as the examinations in Accounting,
Commerce and Economics.
(3) In the Supplementary Session a candidate shall be allowed
to register for the examination if he did not obtain at least grade 5
during the May session of examinations in any of the four subjects
offered.
Results.
Examination shall be indicated by grades 1 to 7, 1 being the highest
and 7 the lowest. Candidates awarded grades 1 to 5 shall have
reached the standard of the corresponding pass in the former
Matriculation and School Leaving Examinations at Ordinary Level.

Grade 6 shall indicate a lower level of attainment and grade 7 shall
indicate the lowest level of attainment considered by the Markers
Panel to be of sufficient standard to be recorded.
(2) The results of candidates who do not obtain at least a grade
7 shall remain unclassified.
Dates of the 
Examination.
6. (1) Time-tables for the First and the Supplementary
Sessions shall be published on the University Notice Boards and in
the Malta Government Gazette before the end of November and the
end of July respectively.
(2) The First and the Supplementary Sessions may start on any
day in May and in September respectively.
Eligibility for 
registration.
7. Only candidates who complete their studies in Form V or
who shall have reached the age of 16 years by 31st December of the
year of examination shall be allowed to register for the Secondary
Education Certificate Examination.
Registration. 8. (1) Applications for registration, on the proper form and
accompanied by the appropriate fee, must be made by the closing
date as published in the notice for registration.
(2) Applications for the First Session submitted after the
closing date but before 31st January will be accepted if an
additional fee is paid.
(3) For the First Session the Registrar may accept applications
after the closing date in accordance with statutes and regulations in
force at the time.
(4) Applications for the Supplementary Session shall be
received only during the week following the publication of the First
Session results.
(5) Alterations to the registration form may only be made by
the candidate subject to the same conditions and additional fees
applicable for late registration.
Certificates. 9. A certificate showing the grade obtained in each subject
shall be issued to any candidate who obtains a grade from 1 to 7.
