DIPLOMA IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION 
STUDIES (DIP. LIB.) COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Library
and Information Studies (Dip. Lib.) Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in Library
and Information Studies (Dip. Lib.);
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Library and Information
Studies (Dip. Lib.).
Applicability.
1993 or later.
Eligibility for 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma a candidate
shall:
( a ) have been registered as a part-time student in the
Faculty of Education for not less than two years;
( b ) satisfy any special course requirements;
( c ) complete the course of studies, qualify in the
examinations, and comply with all other requirements
prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) comply with any other requirements prescribed in any
other relevant statutes and regulations of the
University.
Registration for 
study programme.
4. (1) A candidate may be registered as a part-time student at
the Faculty of Education for a course of studies leading to the
Diploma if he is eligible for admission to the University as a
regular student in terms of the Admission Regulations of the
University.
(2) A candidate shall register on the prescribed form within the
time specified by the Office of the Registrar.
(3) A student who, after due warning given in writing,
persistently fails to attend lectures and/or tutorials or otherwise
does not carry out his academic duties without adequate
justification may be debarred by the Board of the Faculty of
Education from sitting for any or all of the examinations.
Board of Studies.
entrusted to a Board of Studies composed of a Chairman, Co-
ordinator and three members, all appointed by the Board of the
Faculty of Education with the approval of Senate.

(2) The Co-ordinator shall be responsible for the drawing up of
syllabi and of course-lists, as well as for provision for the
availability of support material with the co-operation and approval
of the Board of Studies.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course shall spread over two years of part-time
study and shall be divided into two parts of one year’s duration
each.
(2) The main areas of the course shall consist of:
( a ) Library Management, Organisation and Functions;
( b ) Information Sources and Reference Work;
( c ) Bibliographic Studies, Indexing and Retrieval;
( d ) Library Automation and Information Management.
(3) The course shall be composed of study-units for which not
less than 30 credits shall be assigned. Of the 30 credits, four shall
be assigned to a supervised Long Essay/Study Project and two to an
approved Practical Work Period.
(4) A catalogue of study-units and of the credits assigned to
each unit shall be submitted by the Board of Studies to the Board of
the Faculty of Education for its approval.
(5) Such catalogue shall be published before the start of the
Course.
(6) Some study-units may be indicated as compulsory and
others as optional.
(7) Some study-units may involve guided practical work. This
shall be considered as an essential component of the course for
which credits shall be assigned.
(8) The Board of Studies may direct which study-units a
candidate may take to complete the appropriate study programme.
Assessment. 7. (1) A candidate shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if he:
( a ) completes successfully all parts of the course;
( b ) is successful in the final examination;
( c ) completes successfully the Long Essay or the Project;
and
( d ) completes successfully a four-week period of
approved practical work.
(2) A candidate shall be required to complete successfully Part
One of the course before proceeding to Part Two.
(3) A candidate completes successfully each part of the course
if he obtains a minimum of eleven credits in that part.
(4) The result obtained in each study-unit shall be given in one
of the following grades according to merit: for a successfully
completed unit A, B, C, D in descending order; F signifies a failure.
(5) A candidate who in either part of the course obtains a
minimum of nine credits but fails to obtain eleven credits shall be

allowed to re-sit the failed study units once within a period of
twelve months from the start of that part. Credits obtained
following a re-sit shall carry the minimum pass grade.
Individual project.
not less than eight thousand but not more than ten thousand words
or a project deemed to be of equivalent academic standard. A
candidate who fails the long essay/project requirement shall be
allowed to re-submit it once within a period of twelve months.
Final examination.
minimum passmark in the final examination, which shall consist of
two synoptic examination papers. A candidate who fails the final
examination shall be allowed to re-sit it once within a period of
twelve months from the end of the course. A minimum pass-mark
shall be the highest mark that can be awarded in that case.
(2) Candidates may also be required to sit for a  viva voce
examination.

(2) The names of candidates who have successfully completed
the course shall be published in alphabetical order in the categories:
Passed with Distinction
 Passed.
