DIPLOMA IN SCHOOL COUNSELLING 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in School
Counselling Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in School Counselling.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable for courses which
started in 1996 or later.
Eligibility for 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma candidates
shall:
( a ) be registered as part-time students in the Faculty of
Education for not less than two years;
( b ) complete the appropriate study programme;
( c ) satisfy the relevant assessment criteria; and
( d ) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in these
regulations and any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Registration.
the Faculty of Education if they are in possession of a University
recognised teaching qualification and have not less than five years
teaching experience after obtaining the teaching qualification.
(2) Candidates shall present a written statement of interest and
objectives and submit names and addresses of two suitable referees
who can attest to the applicant’s potential as a counsellor.
Course of studies.

5. (1) The course programme shall consuist of study-units, to
which not less than 30 credits are assigned, in the following course
components:
( a ) Counselling Theory and Practice
( b ) Guidance and Guidance Services
( c ) Personal and Professional Development
( d ) Sociological and Psychological Perspectives
( e ) Design of Educational Investigation.
(2) The course shall be spread over two years of part-time
study and shall be divided in two equal parts of one year’s duration

each.
Assessment.

6. (1) Candidates shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they:
( a ) complete successfully Part One and Part Two of the
course; and
( b ) are successful in the final examinations.
(2) Candidates shall be required to complete successfully Part
One of the course before proceeding to Part Two.
(3) Candidates shall be awarded a Certificate in Helping Skills
for Part One of the course, if they have completed successfully all
the compulsory study-units and obtained a minimum of 15 credits.
(4) In each semester of the course candidates shall be assessed
in the study-units covered during that semester in accordance with
the criteria established by the Board.
(5) The following grades shall be used in the assessment of
credits: A, B, C, D and F, in descending order of merit, with F
indicating failure.
(6) Candidates shall be considered to have completed Part One
of the Course successfully if they obtain a minimum of a C grade
average in the credits and obtain a pass in an oral examination at
the end of the second semester.
(7) Only those candidates who have obtained at least 25 credits
with a C grade average and have attended regularly throughout the
course will be allowed to register for the final examinations.
(8) Candidates who fail in any study-unit may be allowed to
re-take the assessment. A candidate may be allowed to repeat the
assessment only once. In such cases the maximum grade a
candidate can obtain shall be "D".
(9) A written comprehensive examination consisting of two
papers and an oral examination shall be held at the end of the
Course. Candidates who fail are entitled to one resit within six
months from the date of the publication of the result.
Final grading. 7. (1) The final grading shall be based on the study-units and
the final examinations.
(2) The names of candidates who qualify for the Diploma shall
be published in alphabetical order in the categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
