COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of
Communications (Honours) - B. Communications (Hons.) - Degree
Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Bachelor
of Communications (Honours);
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Communications
(Honours).
Applicability.
1995 or later.
Eligibility.
must have:
( a ) completed the appropriate course of studies;
( b ) been successful in the relevant examinations; and
( c ) satisfied all the other requirements laid down in these
regulations and any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Registration and 
special course 
requirements.
4. (1) A candidate may be registered for a course of studies
leading to the Degree if he has fulfilled the conditions set out in
either paragraph ( a ) or paragraph ( b ) or paragraph ( c ):
( a ) (i) successfully completed Part I of the B.
Communications course; and
(ii) obtained an average of grade B or better in the
overall assessment of the 16 credits in
Communication Studies of Part I of the B.
Communications Course; and
(iii) obtained an average of grade C or better in the
overall assessment of the 45 credits of Part I of
the B. Communications course;
( b ) (i) successfully completed Part I of the B.A. in the
Faculty of Arts at the University of Malta with
Communication Studies as one of the principal
areas of study; and
(ii) obtained an average of Grade B or better in the

overall assessment of the 16 credits in
Communication Studies of Part I of the B.A.
course; and
(iii) obtained an average Grade C or better in the 45
credits of Part I of the B.A. course;
( c ) (i) graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, second class
or category or better, from the University or an
equivalent qualification from another University
recognised for the purpose by Senate; and
(ii) successfully completed the 45 credits or
equivalent listed under regulation 5(5) of the
regulations governing the B. Communications
course; and
(iii) obtained an average of Grade B or better in the
overall assessment of the credits in
Communication Studies.
(2) A candidate shall normally be required to proceed to the
course leading to the Degree immediately from Part I of the B.
Communications or B.A. course to the course leading to the Degree
but in any case the candidate shall not be admired to the course
leading to the Degree if more than one year has elapsed after the
completion of Part I of the course he has followed, except by the
permission of Senate.
Course of studies. 5. (1) The course of studies leading to the Degree shall
normally extend over a period of two academic years.
(2) A candidate may not take the final examinations earlier
than two academic years or later than three academic years from
the first admission to the course except with the permission of
Senate.
(3) To complete the course of studies for the Degree a
candidate must obtain a minimum of 44 credits to include:
( a ) 27 credits in communication studies which may
include supervised practicums;
( b ) a total of 8 credits in the main area or in two subsidiary
areas chosen in Part I;
( c ) the 6 credits assigned to a dissertation; and
( d ) 3 optional credits which may be chosen from areas of
study already chosen as main or subsidiary.
(4) A catalogue of study-units and of the credits assigned to
each unit shall be published by the Board before the start of each
academic year.
Examinations. 6. (1) A candidate shall be required to sit for the final
examinations at the end of the course of studies on obtaining not
less than forty-one credits within the prescribed time.
(2) Final examinations shall be held once annually, normally
in May-June, and shall consist of four sessions in Communication
Studies. A  viva voce  examination may also be held.
(3) A main or subsidiary area examination shall consist of two

sessions in the main area or one session in each subsidiary area of
study. These sessions shall be held at the end of the first year.
(4) To satisfy the final examinations requirements a candidate
must be successful in each session of the final examinations and the
main or subsidiary area examinations.
(5) A candidate who fails in any of the six sessions may be
allowed a supplementary session in the failed session or sessions
once.
(6) The grade or mark obtained through a supplementary
session of the final examinations shall carry the minimum pass
grade or Fail.
Final results.
shall take into account the candidate’s performance at the final
examinations, the main or subsidiary area examinations, the
dissertation, as well as the grades obtained for the credits specified
in regulation 5(3).
(2) The weighting for the grading of the final result shall be as
follows:
( a ) final examinations shall carry forty  per centum ;
( b ) main or subsidiary area examinations shall carry ten
per centum ;
( c ) the dissertation shall carry 15  per centum ;
( d ) the other thirty five  per centum  shall be calculated on
the basis of the overall average obtained for the credits
specified in regulation 5(3).
(3) In the final results, the names of candidates who qualify for
the award of the Degree shall be published in alphabetical order in
a list divided into First Class, Second Class (Upper Division),
Second Class (Lower Division) and Third Class.
