ASSESSMENT TESTS REGULATIONS

ASSESSMENT TESTS REGULATIONS
1. Coursework assessment for the award of credit shall be the
responsibility of the lecturer/s who teach/es the particular study-
unit in consultation with the Head of Department. The method of
assessment is pre-announced in the course programme published at
the beginning of the year and approved by the Faculty Board on the
recommendation of the Board of Studies for the course.
2. Assessments may take the form of: 
( a ) written tests, normally a 1 hour test for the award of 1
credit;
( b ) written essay type assignments to be handed in within
a specified time limit, normally not less than two
weeks. An assignment of between 1500 and 2500
words is the norm for the award of one credit:
( c ) oral tests;
( d ) practical projects;
( e ) combinations of two or more of the above;
( f ) any other form of assessment as approved by the
Board of Studies.
3. Students taking an assessment test shall be liable to
disciplinary action if by any means they obtain or seek to obtain
unfair advantage in the test. Improper conduct includes:
( a ) copying or attempting to copy from unauthorised
material or giving or seeking to give assistance to, or
seeking to obtain or accepting assistance from, any
other student during a specified time set for a written
test;
( b ) being in possession of unauthorised material during a
specified time set for a written test;
( c ) engaging in plagiarism - defined as the
unacknowledged use as one’s own, of work of another
person, whether or not such work has been published;
( d ) submitting work or part thereof that has been
submitted for the award of another credit without the

permission of the lecturer concerned.
4.1 When a student is alleged to have committed a breach of
these regulations the case is examined by a Faculty Disciplinary
Board composed of the Dean, the Head of Department concerned
and the lecturer responsible for the test. When the Dean happens to
be also the Head of Department as well as the lecturer responsible
for the test, another head of Department is appointed by the Faculty
Board so that the Faculty Disciplinary Board shall not consist of
less than two members.
4.2 A student who is accused of a breach of these regulations
has a right to be heard by the Faculty Disciplinary Board and to be
assisted by another student if he so chooses.
5. The Faculty Disciplinary Board shall have the power to:
( a ) cancel the result of the test, with or without the
possibility of a re-sit; or
( b ) refer the case to the University Disciplinary Board for
action to be taken in terms of University regulations.
6. A student may appeal from a decision taken by the Faculty
Disciplinary Board to the University Disciplinary Board by writing
to the Registrar within a period of not more than five working days
from when the decision of the Faculty Disciplinary Board is
communicated to him.
