FEES FOR ABATTOIR AND VETERINARY 
SERVICES REGULATIONS

2. The fees specified in the Schedule hereto shall be paid to
the Director of Veterinary Services in the several matters to which
they are applicable.

SCHEDULE 
I. Abattoir Fees
(A) For the inspection of the animal
meat, its registration and grading of:
Bovines ......................................... 50c per head
Equines ......................................... 50c per head
Pigs ............................................... 30c per head
Sheep and goats ............................. 30c per head
Lambs and kids ............................. 10c per head
(B) For lairage, slaughter, dressing, hot
weighing, chilling and cold
weighing -
(i) Bovine, equine, ovine, caprine:
Carcasses and parts thereof,
including skins, but excluding
offals:
hot weight ............................. 8 mils/kg
cold weight ........................... 9 mils/kg
(ii) Pigs:
Carcasses and parts thereof,
including skins, but excluding
offals:
hot weight ............................. 8 mils/kg
(C) For animals brought for slaughter
and kept in the lairages for more
than one night, per head, per night
after the first night ......................... 10c

(D) For keeping carcasses in chillers for
more than three days, not being a
Saturday or a Sunday, per carcass or
part thereof, per day after the third
day ........................................ 10c
On Saturdays and Sundays rates are
paid as indicated in terms of item IV
(B) of this Schedule.
(E) For the freezing of carcasses by blast
freezer whenever the blast freezer is
used:
- for each pig carcass, per day ..... Lm1.50
- for each bovine carcass, per day  Lm2
So however that the minimum
payment for each lot shall be ........... Lm40
(F) For the keeping of carcasses or parts
in freeze under -18ºC:
(i) whole or cut carcasses .............. Lm20 per ton
per month
(ii) cut meat packed in cardboard
boxes (the netting, plastic and
cardboard shall be at the expense
of the user of the freezing
facilities) .................... Lm15 per ton
per month
II. Veterinary Services Fees
(A) For inspection of animals prior to
export or after importation:
Equines ......................................... Lm5 per head
Bovines ......................................... Lm2 per head
Other animals including dogs and
cats ............................................... Lm4 per head
Day-old chicks .............................. 3c per head
Ornamental fowls/parrots .............. Lm2 per head
Pigeons exported for racing back to
Malta (not including an inspection
inside a loft) .................................. Lm10 per 1000
Bird Skins ..................................... Lm20 per

Birds, pigeons and rabbits ............. Lm20 per
import
(B) (i) For inspection of meat and fish
exports and the products thereof .... 1c per kg
(ii) For inspection of and tests on
meat and fish exports and the
products thereof, commercially or by
transboard ..................................... Lm20

(C) (i) For laboratory examinations on
animals, fish or other products prior
to export or import, payment shall be
according to a schedule issued by the
laboratory each year, but for which
entire examination there shall not be
charged a fee of less than

(ii) For laboratory examinations on
animals not coming from farm-
houses having a production licence,
payment shall be according to a
schedule issued by the laboratory
each year, but for which entire
examination there shall not be

(D) For the issue of each stamp, brand or
label denoting approval of export
establishments:
- Each carcass or part thereof ...... 2c
- Each box .................................. 2c
The branding expenses shall be
defrayed by the concerned
establishment.
(E) For the approval of a processing
establishment for local consumption  Lm10 per year
(F) (i) For the approval and certification
of vehicles containing a freezer for
the transportation of meat and fish
for export ................. Lm25 per year
(ii) For the approval and
certification of vehicles for the
transportation of swill ................... Lm10 per year
(G) For the approval and certification of
a vehicle containing a freezer for the
transportation of meat and fish in
Malta ......................................... Lm25 per year
(H) For the approval and certification of
a butcher’s shop ........................ Lm5 per year
(I) For the inspection and approval of
hatcheries ...................................... Lm10 per year
(J) For the licensing of hatcheries ....... Lm20 per year
(K) For the issue of sanitary certificates
for animals, pigeons, fish and
products thereof ............................ Lm2 per
certificate
III. Quarantine Fees
(A) For the keeping of small animals in
quarantine, per day:

- large dogs (over 5 kg) ............... Lm2
- Song-birds ................................ 25c

(B) For the keeping of large animals in
quarantine, per day:
- small ruminants ........................ 50c
- large ruminants ......................... 50c
- horses and others ...................... 50c
- Transboarding .......................... Lm5
- Animals kept for a longer time
than the quarantine period, for
each cell used ........................... Lm50
IV. Other Fees
(A) For an abstract from the Abattoir
Weighing Register covering
weighing and gradings during any
one month or part thereof .............. 5c
(B) Other services rendered and which
do not appear under this Schedule
shall be at the discretion of the
Director of Veterinary Services, and
any fee which may be so charged
shall be indicated beforehand to the
person concerned.
