EMPLOYMENT OF YOUNG PERSONS IN 
MERCHANT SHIPPING REGULATIONS

Title.
Persons in Merchant Shipping Regulations.
Interpretation.
Cap. 234.
"child" means a person under the age of sixteen years;
"Maltese ship" shall have the same meaning as is assigned to it
by article 3 of the Act;
"Registrar-General" means the Registrar-General of Shipping
and Seamen appointed under article 363 of the Act; and
"young person" means a person under the age of eighteen years.
Application.
Employment of 
children.
4. A child who has attained the age of fourteen years may be
employed in a Maltese ship provided that the work done by such
child is an integral part of -
( a ) a course of education or training for which a school or
training institution is primarily responsible, which
course has been recognised and approved by the
Registrar-General; or
( b ) a programme of training, which programme has been
recognised and approved by the Registrar-General; or
( c ) a programme of guidance or orientation designed to
facilitate the choice of an occupation or of a line of
training,which programme has been recognised and
approved by the Registrar-General.
Trimmers and 
stokers.
5. No young person shall be employed as a trimmer or stoker
in any ship.
