STATUTE I 06 - INSTITUTE OF GERONTOLOGY 
STATUTE

Citation.
Gerontology Statute.
Institute of 
Gerontology.
1. There is hereby established an Institute of Gerontology at
the University of Malta.
Aims of the 
Institute.
2. The aims of the Institute shall be:
(i) to organize interdisciplinary research concerning
aging and the elderly;
(ii) to set up postgraduate courses related to the care
of the elderly;
(iii) to co-operate with the UN Institute on Aging in
Malta.
Board.
3.1 The Board shall consist of the following:
Chairperson: Rector or his nominated deputy;
Vice-Chairperson: Director of the Institute;
A person appointed by the Council of the University
for three years;
Two persons appointed by the Senate of the University
for three years;
The Heads of the Departments of Medicine and of
Social Studies, unless already appointed to the Board;
Up to four scholars of repute to he appointed by co-
option.
3.2 The functions of the Board shall he the following:
( a ) to determine the policy of the Institute with regard to
the objectives stated above;
( b ) to ensure the proper financial administration of the
Institute;
( c ) to ensure the collaboration with other bodies local and
foreign, necessary for achieving the aims of the
Institute.
Director and staff.
4.1 The Director shall be appointed by the Council of the
University for a period of three years following a call for
applications.
4.2 Academic and other member of staff shall be appointed by

the Council on the recommendations of the Board:
Provided that the Board may itself appoint non-academic
staff for periods not exceeding one year.
Treasurer. 5. The Finance Officer of the University of Malta will be
Treasurer of the Institute. The Director will prepare the annual
budget of the Institute and submit it to the Board for approval. The
Director will also submit a financial statement and an annual report
on the activities of the Institute.
Amendements. 6. Amendements to this Statute may be proposed by the
Board for the approval of the Council of the University.
