STATUTE I 07 - MEDITERRANEAN INSTITUTE 
STATUTE

Citation.
Institute Statute.
Mediterranean 
Institute.
1. There is hereby established a Mediterranean Institute at the
University of Malta.
Aims of the 
Institute.
2. The aims of the Institute shall be to promote Mediterranean
Studies, in particular by:
( a ) organizing interdisciplinary courses;
( b ) undertaking and publishing research;
( c ) supporting specialized Centres and Programmes in
different fields of the Arts and Social Sciences;
( d ) collaborating with the Foundation for International
Studies on projects and activities of mutual interest.
Board.
3.1 The Board shall consist of the following:
Chairperson: the Rector of the University or his
deputy;
Vice-chairperson: the Director-General of the
Foundation for International Studies;
One member appointed by each of the Council and the
Senate of the University and the Board of the
Foundation, for three years;
Two members appointed by and from the staff of the
Institute, holding posts of director or coordinator of
programmes;
Up to four scholars of repute appointed by co-option.
3.2 The functions of the Board shall be the following:
( a ) determining the policy of the Institute with regard to
the objectives stated above;
( b ) overseeing the financial administration of the Institute;
( c ) ensuring the collaboration with other bodies, local and
foreign, necessary for achieving the aims of the
Institute.

4. The Institute shall have a Director and staff.
4.1 The Director shall be appointed by the Council of the
University, for a period of five years following a call for
applications, with the possibility of renewal, on the

recommendation of the Board of the Institute.
4.2 Academic and other members of staff shall be appointed by
the Council on the recommendation of the Board:
Provided that the Board may itself appoint non-academic
staff for periods not exceeding one year.
Administration of 
the Institute.
5. The Director shall be responsible for the day to day
administration of the Institute, according to the policy established
by the Board, the drawing up of the annual budget, financial
statement and report on the activities of the Institute. The Finance
Officer of the University will be the Treasurer of the Institute.
Amendments. 6. Amendments to this Statute may be proposed by the Board
for the approval of the Council of the University.
