BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF 
PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
SCIENCE

LEGAL NOTICE 41 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Faculty of Science.
(2) In these bye-laws unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Science;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy - Ph.D.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.
Applicability.
onwards.
Registration.
( a ) a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree; or
( b ) a Master’s degree from the University of Malta; or
( c ) an equivalent qualification as approved by Senate on
the recommendation of the Board.
Course open to 
graduates.
4. The course is normally open to graduates who have
obtained the degree specified in bye-law 3:
( a ) within the last ten years before applying for the
course; or
( b ) if the qualification is older than ten years, produce
sufficient proof of their competence to carry out such a
research degree subject to approval by SEnate on the
advice of the Board.
Registration for 
M.Phil. degree.
5. Candidates who wish to take the Degree would normally be
expected to register first for an M.Phil. degree.
Transfer.
Ph.D. course shall not normally be awarded the M.Phil. degree.
Thesis format and 
presentation.
7. The thesis shall normally be written in English for
purposes of international publication.
Format.
quality white paper according to the following specifications:
( a ) the size of the paper shall be A4;
( b ) the margins should be 2.5 cm on each side of the page
to allow for binding; 3.5 cm top and bottom with

numbering on the bottom of each page; text to be in
double line spacing; and
( c ) the binding to be in Art vellum or cloth (black);
overcast, edges uncut; lettered boldly up back in gold
with degree, date and name. The front cover shall
contain the title, author’s name and year of submission
only.
Copies. 9. A student shall be required to submit three copies of the
thesis, one of which shall be retained in the University Library,
another one in the custody of the department concerned, and the
third returned to the student after the examination.
Length. 10. The thesis should not normally exceed 350 sides in length.
Printed 
contributions.
11. The student may submit separately any printed
contributions to the advancement of the subject published
independently or conjointly.
