DIPLOMA IN ADULT TRAINING AND 
DEVELOPMENT COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Adult
Training and Development Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies relevant to the course:
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Adult Training and
Development.
Applicability.
1994 or later.
Eligibility for 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma a candidate
shall:
( a ) be registered as a part-time student in the Faculty of
Education;
( b ) complete the appropriate course of studies
(coursework, practical work and project) in Adult
Training and Development;
( c ) pass all prescribed examinations; and
( d ) satisfy all the requirements prescribed in these
regulations.
Registration.
Faculty of Education on the prescribed form within the time
specified by the Office of the Registrar.
(2) Candidates may be registered as part-time students in the
Faculty of Education for a course of studies leading to the Diploma
if they are eligible for admission to the University as regular
students in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.
(3) Applicants shall be required to attend an interview
conducted by the Board for the purpose of assessment of their
aptitude and background in conformity with Admission
Regulations.
Course 
administration.
5. (1) The general administration of the course shall be
entrusted to the Board.
(2) The Co-ordinator shall be responsible for the drawing up of
syllabi and of course lists as well as for the preparation or
provisions for the availability of support material, with the
cooperation and approval of the Board.

Course of studies. 6. The course shall extend over two years and shall consist of
the following:
( a ) study-units for which 15 credits shall be assigned;
( b ) a project for which 5 credits shall be assigned;
( c ) a practical work assignment for which 5 credits shall
be assigned; and
( d ) a final examination.
Assessment. 7. Candidates shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they:
( a ) complete successfully Part One and Part Two of the
course;
( b ) are successful in the practical work assignment;
( c ) are successful in the final examination; and
( d ) successfully complete the project.
Part One of the 
course.
8. (1) Part One of the course shall consist of twelve credits
which constitute the work covered during the first year. Candidates
who do not successfully complete Part One shall not be allowed to
proceed to Part Two.
(2) In each semester of the course candidates shall be tested in
the study-units covered during that semester in accordance with the
criteria established by the Board.
(3) The following grades shall be used in the assessment of
credits: A, B, C, D and F, in descending order of merit, with F
indicating failure.
(4) A candidate who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to
retake the test or to repeat the entire study-unit once. In such cases
the maximum grade the candidate can obtain shall be D.
Part Two of the 
course.
9. (1) During Part Two of the course candidates shall be
required to carry out a work-based project or case study. They can
work on an individual basis or in groups not exceeding four
persons. In each case, the project shall be discussed by the
participant/s with a course tutor, and shall be approved by the Co-
ordinator. The project shall be submitted for appraisal two calendar
months prior to the end of the written part of the final examination.
(2) During this part of the course candidates shall be attached
to a Maltese adult training agency recognised by the Board for a
period of five weeks during which they shall work as adult trainers.
They shall throughout these weeks be assisted as well as evaluated
by a tutor appointed for the purpose.
Final 
examinations.
10. (1) At the end of the course, candidates shall take a
comprehensive written examination consisting of four papers. Only
those candidates who have obtained 20 credits and successfully
completed the practical work assignment shall be admitted to the
examinations.
(2) Candidates who fail any or all of the examination papers
shall be allowed to re-sit the failed paper/e at a supplementary
examination session. If successful, the candidate shall be awarded

the minimum pass grade.
Final grading.
in Part One and Part Two of the course, and in the final
examinations.
(2) The names of candidates who qualify for the Diploma shall
be published in alphabetical order in the categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
(3) Candidates shall not be awarded the Diploma unless they
obtain a Pass in each part of the course of studies (that is the credit
tests, the project, the practical work assignment and the final
examinations).
