WATER STUDIES COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postgraduate
Diploma - Dip. Hyd. - and Degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - in
Water Studies Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate on
the recommendation of the Board of the Mediterranean Institute for
the purposes of these regulations;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma or the
Degree;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Science in Water
Studies - M.Sc.; and
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Water Studies
- Dip. Hyd.
Applicability.

Qualifications for 
admission.
3. A candidate shall be eligible to apply for registration in the
course if he:
( a ) has obtained a first degree with at least second
category in an appropriate subject from the University
or an equivalent degree from a foreign university
recognized by Senate for the purpose; or
( b ) satisfies the provisions of regulation 2.2( a )(iii) of the
Admission Regulations and possesses an exceptional
degree of experience in the field of hydrology.
Course of studies.
Module 1: 5 Individual Orientation Study-Units
Module 2: 9 Individual Knowledge Base Study-Units
Module 3: 4 Individual Integrated Knowledge Study-Units
Module 4: 2 Individual Workshops.
(2) Normally each study-unit shall include 14 one-hour
lectures, accompanied by 16 hours of practicals which may be in
the form of tutorials, laboratory and fieldwork, and/or assignments.
(3) Module 1 - Individual Orientation Study-Units: These

study-units are aimed at enabling students from different academic
backgrounds to acquire a level of understanding considered
essential to follow the actual course.
(4) An assessment of each student’s academic background
shall be made at the time of admission to the course and each
student shall be advised on which Individual Orientation Study-
Units he shall be required to attend.
(5) Module 2 - Individual Knowledge Base Study-Units: The
objective of this module is to cover a broad spectrum of study-units
that lead to an understanding of hydrology.
(6) Module 3 - Individual Integrated Knowledge Study-Units:
These study-units shall aim to demonstrate the interdisciplinary
approach required to meet present and future challenges in Water
Studies.
(7) Module 4 - Individual Workshops: The central theme of
this module shall be the devising of strategies for Water Resources
Capacity Building. Each individual workshop shall address one or
several key issues in Integrated Resource Management. Where
applicable, the use of Information Management Systems shall be
demonstrated.
(8) The Board shall draw up a catalogue of study-units and of
the credits assigned to each. The Board may amend such catalogue
from time to time as it may deem advisable, provided that this is
done before the beginning of the academic year.
Assessment. 5. (1) A first assessment of progress shall be carried out in
the form of a written test at the end of Module 1. A student who is
not successful in the written test shall be required to undertake a
viva voce  examination.
(2) No credits shall be awarded for any of the Individual
Orientation Study-Units, but the successful completion of Module
1 shall be considered a prerequisite to continue attending the
course.
(3) Study-units in Modules 2 and 3 shall each be assessed
individually on the basis of progress achieved on completion of
assignments and/or a written test. Module 4 shall be assessed on the
basis of an essay of between 4,000 and 6,000 words on an approved
topic covered in a Workshop.
(4) In the assessments of the individual study-units grades
shall be awarded to successful students on a scale from A to D, A
being the highest mark. F indicates a Fail.
(5) A student who fails an Individual Orientation Study-Unit
may be allowed to sit for a second assessment.
(6) The overall assessment of the respective modules shall be
carried out by the Course co-ordinator in consultation with the
respective lecturers involved in teaching. and, when appropriate.
with other lecturers as may be established by the Board.
Postgraduate 
Diploma course.
6. (1) The course leading to the Diploma shall be completed

within two semesters of full-time study or their equivalent in part-
time study. The course shall normally extend from October to June.
(2) To be eligible for the award of the Diploma a student shall
be required to obtain:
( a ) 9 credits for the Knowledge Base Study-Units in
Module 2;
( b ) 2 credits for the Integrated Knowledge Study-Units in
Module 3;
( c ) 1 credit for an essay of between 4,000 and 6,000 words
on an approved topic covered in a Workshop in
Module 4; and
( d ) at least a pass in the Final Synoptic Examinations.
(3) The performance of students shall be weighted as follows:
Module 2: 40%
Module 3: 15%
Module 4: 10%
Final Synoptic Examinations 35%.
(4) The final results shall be indicated by grades A to D, A
being the highest grade and designated as Passed with Distinction.
Master’s Degree 
course.
8. (1) A student shall be eligible to register for the course
leading to the Degree if he has obtained an overall grade A or B in
the course leading to the Diploma. In this case, the student shall
normally be required to register for the course leading to the
Degree within the three months following the publication of the
final results of the course leading to the Diploma.
(2) Students admitted to the course leading to the Degree shall
be required to:
( a ) register and complete successfully the remaining
study-units in Module 3 which shall be scheduled
during a third semester of full-time study; and
( b ) write a dissertation on an original research project.
(3) On registration for the course leading to the Degree
students shall submit the proposed title of their dissertation and an
outline of a research project to be performed for the purpose of the
dissertation. The project shall be subject to approval by the Board
which shall also nominate a supervisor for each student.
(4) The dissertation shall contain the results of the research
project, a critical review of the relevant literature and a critical
discussion of the results. The dissertation shall not be less than
10,000 words long and shall normally be submitted at the end of the
third semester, but in no case later than eighteen months from the
date of acceptance of its title. Students may undertake the research
project and complete the writing of the dissertation in their
respective countries.
(5) The Board shall make recommendations to Senate

regarding the appointment of Boards of Examiners for the
dissertations.
(6) If a dissertation does not reach the required standard the
student may be required to amend and re-submit it within a period
not exceeding one year. A student may be required to defend his
dissertation during a  viva voce  examination.
Classification and 
award of Degree.
9. (1) The performance of students following the course
leading to the Degree shall be weighted as follows:

Results obtained for the course leading to the
