DIPLOMA IN MUSIC STUDIES - DIP. MUS. - 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Music
Studies - Dip. Mus. - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Mediterranean Institute;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Music Studies - Dip. Mus.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October
2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. A candidate shall in order to be eligible for the award of
the Diploma:
( a ) register and successfully complete the course as
specified hereunder and any other approved area as
provided in these regulations;
( b ) pass the final examination for the Diploma;
( c ) satisfy all other requirements laid down in these
regulations and relative Statutes and Regulations of
the University.
Registration and

4. A candidate may register for the course if he is eligible for
admission to the University as a regular student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University.
Course duration.

(2) A student may not sit for the final examination earlier than
three years after admission to the course
(3) The Board may allow a student, for good and sufficient
reason, to extend  his studies over a maximum of four years, under
such conditions as the Board may determine in each case.

6. (1) The Course shall consist of study-units for which not
less than 24 and not more than 28 credits are assigned.
(2) At the beginning of the course, students shall be required
to choose to pursue either a general programme in Music Studies or
a specialised area of studies (such as Sacred Music or Chamber
Music), according to a programme of studies approved by the
Board.
(3) The Board shall announce the areas of study to be offered

before the commencement of each course.
Catalogue of 
study-units.
7. (1) The Board shall publish, following approval by Senate
before the start of each academic year, a catalogue of study-units
and credits assigned to each study-unit.
(2) The catalogue shall give details of the study-units and shall
also include the method of assessment for each study-unit, which
study-units shall by taken concurrently and which study-units are
prerequisites or recommended.
Progress. 8. (1) The study-units are arranged in such a way that the
course may be completed in three years.
(2) A student is required in each year of the course to register
for a number of study-units for which a total of not less than 8 and
not more than 10 are assigned.
(3) Credits are assigned according to the following grades in
descending order of merit: A, B, C, D, and F, where F indicates
Fail.
(4) A student who registers for a study-unit and does not
complete it shall be considered to have failed that study-unit.
(5) A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit shall
normally be allowed to take a resit once only. If unsuccessful in the
resit, he shall be allowed to repeat the study-unit once, in which
case his assessment shall be graded either as a "D" or as a "Fail".
There shall be no resit when a study-unit is repeated.
(6) Study-units shall be offered at different levels. Basic units
shall be given at Level I while more advanced units shall be offered
at Levels 2 or 3.
(7) A student who obtains fewer than 7 credits in any year of
the course shall not be allowed to continue the course or to sit for
the final examinations except in special circumstances and with the
approval of the Senate.
(8) A student may not sit for a study-unit for which he does not
have the prerequisites or without taking the advised concurrent
study-units except with the permission of the Board.
Final 
examinations.
9. (1) Final examinations shall be held once annually,
normally in May-June and shall consist of two papers. A practical
examination may also be held.
(2) A student is required to sit for the final examination on
completing the course.
(3) Credits shall for the purpose of regulation 8(5) be awarded
provisionally to a student for those study-units which end just
before the final examination he is taking, provided that student’s
performance during the study-unit is considered satisfactory.
Final results. 10. (1) The final result of a student shall take into account the
performance of the student in the final examinations as well as the
credits and grades obtained during his course.
(2) The student shall not qualify for the Diploma if he does not
pass the final examinations in one session.

(3) The final examinations carry 50% of the weighting for the
final result. The study-units carry the remaining 50%. If more than
24 credits are obtained by a student, the compulsory credits shall be
first taken into account followed by the best optional credits.
(4) The names of candidates who qualify for the Diploma shall
be published in the final results in alphabetical order in the
categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
Resit.
prejudice to regulations 5(2) and 9(2), be allowed by the Board of
Studies to resit the whole final examinations once under such
conditions as this Board may  determine in each case. If successful,
such a student shall be placed in the Pass category in the final
results.
