BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF 
PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIL ENGINEERING

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Faculty of Architecture and
Civil Engineering.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
the Board" means the Faculty Board of Architecture and Civil
Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy - Ph.D. - in Architecture and Civil Engineering;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.
Applicability.
Registration.
Architecture and Civil Engineering shall satisfy the following bye-
laws in terms of regulation 4(1)( b ) of the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy Regulations, and in addition to the requirements of the
general regulations governing the Degree.
(2) A candidate shall normally be required to register in the
first instance for the M.Phil. degree before registering for the
Degree. A candidate shall only in exceptional circumstances be
considered for direct registration to the Ph.D. degree.
Transfer of 
registration.
4. (1) The upgrading of the registration from the M.Phil.
degree to the Degree shall be permitted not less than twelve months
full-time study or twenty-four months part-time study after the
registration for the M.Phil. degree, and on the recommendation of
the student’s supervisor and the approval of the Faculty Board of
Architecture and Civil Engineering.
(2) A student shall be required to register every twelve
months, on the written recommendation of the supervisor.
Research proposals 
and thesis.
5. (1) A student’s research proposals shall indicate clearly
the research questions in the field to be addressed, the hypotheses
to be tested, and the methodology to be adopted in dealing with the
research issues. A student may where necessary be required to
demonstrate competence in those skills required by the related
nature of the investigation.
(2) Students registered for the Degree shall be required to
participate fully in the Faculty’s research seminars.

(3) A student’s thesis shall report the discovery of new facts
and/or demonstrate that the student has exercised an independent
critical analysis in reaching the reported conclusion. The student
shall in both respects indicate clearly the extent to which the thesis
incorporate the results of his own research and observations, and to
what extent the investigation advances the study of the subject.
(4) Any changes to the title of the student’s thesis must first be
approved by the Faculty Board on the written recommendation of
the supervisor, and shall be submitted for the approval of Senate
according to regulation 7(1) of the Degree.
(5) Another supervisor shall be appointed by the Faculty
Board to enable the student’s studies to proceed in cases where the
student’s appointed supervisor is unable to continue providing
supervision.
(6) The thesis shall not normally exceed 60,000 words
exclusive of appendices, bibliographies, glossaries, and footnotes.
(7) Three type-written or printed and bound copies of the
thesis, set out in accordance with the University’s notes on the
presentation of thesis and reports shall be presented.
(8) A short abstract of the thesis of not more than 300 words
shall be bound with each copy submitted to the University. 
(9) A student may be given permission by the Faculty Board to
publish part of his findings prior to the submission of the thesis.
