DIPLOMA IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A 
FOREIGN LANGUAGE - DIP. TEFL - COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 260 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in the
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language - Dip. TEFL - Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in the
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language - Dip. TEFL; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in the Teaching of English as
a Foreign Language - Dip. TEFL.
Applicability.
October 1998 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students of the University;
( b ) have completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) have satisfied all other requirements laid down in the
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Special course 
requirements.
4. (1) Applicants may be registered for the course according
to the provisions of these regulations, if they are in possession of:
( a ) the general entry requirements, as specified in the
Admission Regulations; and
( b ) a Certificate in the Teaching of English as a Foreign
Language from the University of Malta, or an
equivalent qualification; and
( c ) two years’ English Language teaching experience.
(2) Applicants may be asked to attend for an interview for the
purpose of assessing their aptitude to follow the course.
Duration and 
Course 
programme.
5. (1) The course shall extend over a period of one year of
full-time study or two years of part-time study. Students following
the course on a full-time basis must complete the course in not less

than one year and not more than two years from first registration.
Students following the course on a part-time basis must complete
the course in not less than two years and not more than three years
from first registration. In special circumstances the Senate, on the
advice of the Board, may allow a student a further extra year of
studies in order to complete the course.
(2) The course programme shall consist of:
( a ) study-units to which a total of 25 credits are assigned
in the following areas of study:
(i) Directions in the Teaching of English as a
Foreign Language
(ii) Course Design and Development in the Teaching
of English as a Foreign Language
(iii) the Management of TEFL courses and
programmes;
( b ) a Field-Placement; and
( c ) a Long Essay/Project.
Assessment. 6. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D. F
indicates Fail and I indicates Incomplete.
(2) Throughout the course, students shall be assessed in the
studyunits in accordance with the criteria established by the Board
of Studies.
(3) A student shall be considered to have satisfied all the
assessment criteria of the course if he:
( a ) obtains a minimum of 22 credits;
( b ) is successful in the final examination;
( c ) obtains a Pass in the Field-Placement; and
( d ) completes successfully the Long Essay/Project.
(4) A student who fails in the assessment of a study-unit shall
be allowed one re-assessment. If successful in the re-assessment,
the maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(5) If by the end of the course a student has failed to obtain the
22 credits required by subregulation (3), that student shall be
allowed to be re-assessed in as many study-units as would allow
him to reach this number of credits. However, if by the end of a
course a student has failed to obtain a minimum of 19 credits no re-
assessment shall be allowed and the Diploma shall not be awarded.
Field-Placement. 7. (1) The Field-Placement shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail
basis.
(2) If a student fails the Field-Placement he may be required to
repeat it.
Long Essay/
Project.
8. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of
approximately six thousand words, or a Project deemed to be of
equivalent academic standing, not later than the last day of the final
examination.

(2) The subject of the Long Essay/Project must be submitted
for the approval of the Board of Studies not later than six months
before the final examination.
(3) A student who fails to satisfy the examiners in the Long
Essay/Project shall be allowed to re-submit it once within a period
of twelve months.
Final examination.

(2) Students who fail in any of the examination papers shall be
allowed to re-sit the failed paper or papers once within a period of
twelve months from the date of the publication of results. The
maximum grade that may be awarded after such a supplementary
examination shall be grade D.
Final result.
each student having taken into account his performance in the:
( a ) study-units, which shall be allocated 60% of the
weighting;
( b ) Long Essay/Project, which shall be allocated 10% of
the weighting; and
( c ) final examination, which shall be allocated 30% of the
weighting.
(2) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
