PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. - IN THE INSTITUTE FOR 
ENERGY TECHNOLOGY

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Institute for Energy
Technology.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute for Energy
Technology;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy - Ph.D.; and
"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.

3. The course is open to graduates who have obtained:
( a ) a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree; or
( b ) a Bachelor of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
(Honours) degree; or
( c ) a Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Honours)
degree; or
( d ) a Master’s degree from the University in a related
subject; or
( e ) an equivalent qualification as approved by Senate, on
the recommendation of the Board.
Graduates.
obtained the degree specified in regulation 3:
( a ) within the last ten years before applying for the
course; or
( b ) if the qualification is older than ten years, if they
provide sufficient proof of their competence to carry
out such a research degree, subject to approval by
Senate on the advice of the Board.

Thesis. 7. The thesis shall normally not exceed 50,000 words in
length, exclusive of references and bibliographies.
Copies. 8. Students shall be required to submit a copy of the thesis,
adequately bound, to each member of the Board of Examiners.
Within three months of passing the examination of the thesis,
students must submit two copies of the thesis, one of which should
be deposited at the University Library bound as follows:
in cloth (preferably black) with stiff boards and good
quality end papers; with lettering (preferably in gold)
on the front and spine showing:
(i) the name of the student;
(ii) the title or short title of the thesis;
(iii) the degree for which the thesis is submitted; and
(iv) the year of submission.
Maps, diagrams, graphs, printed material, etc., should be
bound with the thesis, but if this is not possible, they should be
presented separately in special folders or volumes and numbered.
Format. 9. The text must be typed on A4 sheets, on one side only, in
double line spacing and with a margin of 40 mm to the left and at
least 20 mm top, bottom and right.
