IN THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING DEGREE 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Master of Science -
M.Sc. - in Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Degree
Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires:
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Master of
Science - M.Sc. - in Engineering; and
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - in
Engineering 
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall apply for courses starting in
October 1999 or later.
Admission 
requirements.
3. The course shall be open to applicants in possession of one
of the following qualifications:
( a ) the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree with at
least Second Class Honours; or 
( b ) the Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with at least
Second Class Honours in appropriate subjects as
approved by the Board; or
( c ) equivalent qualifications approved by Senate on the
recommendation of the Board.
Course of studies.
Engineering where the Faculty of Engineering can offer expert
guidance and supervision. The areas of study shall be indicated by
the Board before the commencement of each course.
Study-units and 
dissertation.

5. The course shall consist of taught study-units, to which a
total of 24 credits shall be assigned, and a dissertation to which a
total of 8 credits shall be assigned. Students shall be required to
obtain all the credits within the stipulated period.
Duration of course.

6. The course shall extend over a period of twelve months of
full-time study or of three academic years of part-time study. It
may be offered on a part-time basis only in the evening.
Students on part-
time basis.
7. Students pursuing the course on a part-time basis shall be
required to register at the beginning of each academic year.
Catalogue of 
study-units.
8. The Board shall draw up the programme of studies for the
course and shall publish a catalogue of study-units. The catalogue

shall indicate the code, title, description and type of study-unit, the
credits assigned to each, and the methods of teaching and
assessment. The Board shall publish the catalogue for the course
prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate.
Progress and 
assessment.
9. Taught study-units shall be assessed through coursework
and examinations held at the end of the semester in which they
were held.
Boards of 
Examiners.
10. Boards of Examiners shall be appointed for each study-unit
in accordance with the provisions of the University Examinations
Regulations.
Failure in study-
units to which not 
more than three 
credits are 
assigned.
11. Students who fail in study-units to which not more than
three credits are assigned shall be re-examined through a
supplementary  viva voce  examination by not later than August.
Failure in study-
units to which 
more than three 
credits are 
assigned.
12. Students who fail in study-units to which more than three
credits are assigned or who fail in the supplementary  viva voce
examination shall be deemed to have failed the course.
Dissertation.

13. Students shall be required to submit a title and a research
proposal for the dissertation by the end of the first semester of the
course or by the end of the fourth semester for part-time studies.
Any substantial modification in the title or content must be
approved by the Board.
Submission of 
dissertation.
14. Students shall be allowed to present their dissertation after
having obtained the 24 credits indicated in regulation 5. The
dissertation shall consist of not more than 10,000 words and must
be submitted by the second week of September.
Supervisor. 15. The Board shall appoint a supervisor for each dissertation.
Dissertations may not normally be submitted for examination
without the approval of the supervisor. If the Board of Examiners
deems the dissertation as not satisfactory, the student shall be
considered to have failed the course.
Presentation of 
dissertation.
16. The Board may allow students to present the dissertation
within a period to be determined by it, and under those conditions
as it may impose.
Board of 
Examiners for each 
dissertation.
17. The Board shall propose to Senate a Board of Examiners
for each dissertation. The Board of Examiners shall be composed of
at least three examiners, one of whom shall be the supervisor. The
Board of Examiners may include also additional examiners who
shall participate in its deliberations only in so as far as the
deliberations concern areas in which they are the expert authority.
Content and 
presentation.
18. Dissertations must conform to the relevant guidelines as
regards format and must satisfy the Board of Examiners as regards
content and presentation.
Non-acceptance of 
dissertation which 
is identical in 
substance with a 
dissertation already 
submitted.
19. No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in
substance with a dissertation already submitted for a degree in the
University of Malta or any other university. Students shall,
however, not be precluded from incorporating such previous
dissertation work as may be necessary to the presentation and fuller
understanding of their exposition, provided that the nature and

extent of such incorporation are clearly indicated in the dissertation
itself.
Viva voce  
examination.
20. Students shall be required to defend their dissertation or
any other course matter during a  viva voce  examination.
Copies of 
dissertation.
21. Three copies of the dissertation shall be submitted for
examination. After successful defence of the dissertation, students
shall be required to submit two hard-bound copies, one of which
shall be deposited in the University Library and the other in the
library of the department concerned.
Results.
performance of the students in the study-units and in the
dissertation, which shall be weighted as follows:
Study-units 75%
Dissertation 25%.
(2) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
