BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREES OF 
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - AND 
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. -

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these Bye-Laws is Bye-Laws for the
Degrees of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - and Doctor of
Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Institute of Linguistics.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute of Linguistics; and
"the Institute" means the Institute of Linguistics.
Applicability.

3. (1) The M.Phil. degree shall be open to applicants who
possess a Master’s degree or qualifications of comparable standard
recognised by the Senate for the purpose in an area of study
considered by the Board to be closely related and relevant to
Linguistics.
(2) In special cases, the Board may allow applicants who do
not satisfy the requirements specified in paragraph (1) of this bye-
law, to register. Applications by such applicants must include
evidence of proficiency and a recommendation by a member of the
academic staff willing to act as supervisor. The Board may lay
down additional requirements including the taking of one or more
qualifying examinations.
(3) The Ph.D. degree shall be open to applicants who possess a
Master’s degree or a Master of Philosophy degree of the University
of Malta or another university or qualifications of comparable
standard recognised by the Senate for the purpose in an area of
study closely related and relevant to Linguistics, provided that
applicants in possession of a Master’s degree may be required to
register for the degree of Master of Philosophy in the first instance.

4. The research proposal submitted by applicants should
indicate clearly the research questions in the field of Linguistics to
be addressed. Applications for registration must include a
provisional title, a detailed research proposal of about 1000 words,
a written recommendation that the work proposed is feasible from a
person directly concerned in the running of the institution,
laboratory or clinical unit where the work is to be carried out and a
written recommendation by a member of the academic staff willing
to act as supervisor.

Dissertation and 
thesis format and 
presentation.
6. (1) The length of an M.Phil. dissertation shall not normally
exceed 50,000 words and the length of a Ph.D. thesis shall be not
less than 70,000 and not more than 90,000 words, including foot/
endnotes, but excluding bibliography and/or analytical indices and
any appendices.
(2) Students shall be required to submit three copies of the
dissertation or thesis for examination purposes which shall be
adequately bound. Each copy shall contain an abstract of not more
than 300 words. Within one month of passing the examination of
the dissertation or thesis, students must submit two copies, one of
which should be deposited at the University Library and the other
at the library of the Institute. The two copies are to be bound as
follows:
in cloth (preferably black) with stiff boards and good
quality end-papers; with lettering (preferably in gold)
on the front and spine showing:
(i) the name of the student;
(ii) the title or short title of the dissertation or thesis;
(iii) the degree for which the dissertation or thesis is
submitted; and 
(iv) the year of submission.
Maps, diagrams, graphs, printed material, etc., should be
bound with the dissertation or thesis, but if this is not possible they
should be presented separately in special folders or volumes and
numbered.
(3) The text must be typed on A4 sheets, one side only, in
double spacing, font size 12, and with a margin of 40 mm to the left
and at least 20 mm top, bottom and right.
