Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in the
Teaching of Physical Education (Primary Level) - Dip. P.E.
(Primary) - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in the
Teaching of Physical Education (Primary Level) - Dip. P.E.
(Primary); and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in the Teaching of Physical
Education (Primary Level) - Dip. P.E. (Primary).
Applicability.
October 1996.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the course of studies, including
coursework, teaching practice and long essay/project,
pass in the final examination and satisfy any other
requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Admission to the 
course.
4. (1) Applicants shall apply to register for the course on the
prescribed form and within the time specified by the Office of the
Registrar.
(2) To be registered as regular students in the course,
applicants must satisfy the general entry requirements specified in
the Admission Regulations of the University.
(3) Applicants may be asked to attend for an interview for the
purpose of assessment of the required aptitudes and background.

(2) The course shall be divided in two parts, each part

extending over a period of one year.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course of studies shall consist of:
( a ) study-units, including practicum/s, to which a total of
not less than twenty credits shall be assigned;
( b ) teaching practice to which four credits shall be
assigned;
( c ) a long essay/project; and
( d ) a final examination.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, with the credits assigned to
each, shall be published before the commencement of the course,
after approval by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.
Attendance. 7. Students who, after due warning given in writing,
persistently fail to attend lectures and/or tutorials or otherwise do
not carry out their academic duties without adequate justification,
may be debarred by the Board from sitting for any or all of the
examinations.
Assessment. 8. (1) Students shall be required to complete successfully
Part One of the course before proceeding to Part Two.
(2) In order to complete successfully Part One and Part Two of
the course, students shall be required to obtain a minimum of
eleven credits in each Part. Students who do not obtain a minimum
of nine credits in each Part shall not be allowed to continue the
course.
(3) Students who in either Part of the course obtain a minimum
of nine credits but do not obtain eleven credits shall be re-assessed
in the failed study-unit/s once, within a period of twelve months
from the commencement of the relevant Part of the course. If
successful, the maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade
D.
(4) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they:
( a ) complete successfully Parts One and Two of the
course;
( b ) pass in the final examination; and
( c ) complete successfully the long essay/project and the
teaching practice.
(5) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, and D. F indicates Fail and I
indicates Incomplete. To be eligible for the award of a credit,
students must also attend regularly for lectures in each study-unit. 
Long Essay/
Project.
9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay of not
less than eight thousand and not more than ten thousand words, or a
project, on an approved topic, deemed to be of equivalent academic
standard.
(2) Students who fail the long essay/project shall be allowed to
re-submit it once within a period of twelve months.

first three week period shall be in the second semester, while the
second three week period shall be in the third semester.
(2) Students who fail in any of the teaching practice periods
shall be allowed to repeat it once in the fourth semester.
Final examination.

pass mark in the final examination.
(2) Students who fail in the final examination shall be allowed
to re-sit the whole examination once only within a period of twelve
months from the end of the course. The maximum grade that may
be awarded after such a supplementary session shall be grade D.

(2) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:

Status of the 
Diploma.
14. The Diploma course is intended for people who are
interested in teaching physical education, recreation sport and
leisure activities to primary school aged children. The Diploma
course is not equivalent to teacher training courses that entitle
successful candidates to a teacher’s warrant.
