FACILITATORS) COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Faculty of
Education Certificate in Education (Learning Support Facilitators)
Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the Certificate" means the Faculty of Education Certificate in
Education (Learning Support Facilitators); and
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Faculty of
Education Certificate in Education (Learning Support Facilitators).

Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate students
must:
( a ) be registered as provisional students in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) complete the appropriate course of studies, obtain
between 20 and 23 credits of those indicated in
regulation 6 depending on their qualifications at
admission, pass in the final examination, and satisfy
any other requirements prescribed in these regulations;
the study-units to be followed in each case shall be
determined by the Board of Studies at the
commencement of the course; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant. statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.

Registrar.
(2) Applicants may apply to register for the course if they
possess either a Faculty Certificate in Supporting Learning in
Inclusive Settings, or a Faculty Certificate in Education (Learning
Support Trainees), or if they have been successful in the Education
Division’s training as kindergarten assistants, or any other

equivalent certificate as determined by the Board.
(3) Applicants must also satisfy the Board that, they have the
necessary aptitude and may be required to attend an interview for
this purpose.
Duration of course. 5. The course shall extend over two semesters of study on a
part-time basis. It shall also include lecture/practical sessions from
July to September.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course shall consist of the following components:
( a ) modules consisting of study-units taught at pre-
university level, to which not less than 26 credits shall
be assigned, in the following areas of study:
Module 1: Developing an inclusive philosophy
and practice
Module 2: Individualising learning
Module 3: Accessing the curriculum
Module 4: Learning difficulties and disabilities;
and
( b ) practice and direct observation placements, to which
not less than 5 credits shall be assigned, as follows:
Module 5: Practice Placements - Special Area.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, indicating the code, title,
description, credits assigned to each and method of assessment,
shall be published before the commencement of the course,
following approval by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.
Assessment and 
examinations.
7. (1) During the course of studies, students shall be set
assignments, written and/oral tests, and practical and observation
placements which shall be assessed.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, and D, except when a study-
unit is assessed on a pass/fail basis (in which case a grade P is
assigned for the study-unit). Failure shall be indicated by F.
Incomplete work due to justifiable reasons (illness, approved
absence, etc.) shall be indicated by I. In all other cases, the results
of uncompleted study-units shall be indicated as F.
(3) Students who fail any study-unit shall be allowed to re-
submit their assignment/s, or resit the test/s once at the next
examination session. If successful, the maximum grade that may be
awarded shall be grade D.
(4) Students who fail their resit or re-submission shall be
required to withdraw from the course.
(5) The final examination shall consist of one three-hour
written, competency-based, paper.
(6) Students who fail the final examination may be allowed by
the Board to resit the paper once only at the next scheduled
examination session.

Practice and 
observation 
placements.
8. (1) Students are required to undertake one practice
placement of at least four weeks’ duration and one observation
placement of at least three weeks’ duration. Practice and
observation placements shall involve in all not less than four visits
by tutors.
(2) The practice and observation placements shall be assessed
on a Pass/Fail basis. In the case of failure, students shall be allowed
to repeat the failed component once during a period to be
determined by the Board of Studies. In the meantime, such students
shall be allowed to continue the course.
Attendance.
obligatory. In the case of absence for a reason the Board of Studies
considers valid, it may allow students to proceed with the course
provided that alternative arrangements are made to make up for the
missed lectures/practice and observation placements.
Final result.
performance in the st.udy-units, in the practice and observation
placements, and in the final examination according to the following
weighting:
Credits for all study-units taken 40%
Practice and Observation Placements 30%
Final Examination 30%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order
classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
