BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - IN THE EUROPEAN 
DOCUMENTATION AND RESEARCH CENTRE

LEGAL NOTICE 55 of 2000.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the European Documentation
and Research Centre.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the European Documentation
and Research Centre; and
"the Centre" means the European Documentation and Research
Centre.
Applicability.
Eligibility for 
admission.
3. Applications shall be open to candidates who have
graduated with European Studies as a main area of study, normally
at Honours level, and who were placed in the upper half of the
classification in the final examinations of the University of Malta
or another university recognized for the purpose by the Senate.
Candidates who do 
not satisfy 
requirements.
4. Candidates who do not satisfy the requirements specified
in bye-law 3, may, in special cases, apply to the Board for
permission to register. Such applications must include evidence of
proficiency and a recommendation by a member of the academic
staff willing to act as supervisor. The Board may lay down
additional requirements, including the taking of one or more
qualifying examinations.
Proposed 
dissertation.
5. Applications for registration must include the title of the
proposed dissertation and a brief account of it.
Format and 
presentation.
6. Unless otherwise specified by the Board, the length of the
dissertation shall not normally exceed 50,000 words.
Copies.
dissertation for examination which must be adequately bound.
Within one month of passing the examination of the dissertation,
students must submit two copies of the dissertation, one of which
shall be deposited at the University Library, and the other at the
library of the Centre hound as follows:
in cloth (preferably black) with stiff boards and good
quality end papers; wit.h lettering (preferably in gold)
on the front and the spine showing:
( a ) the name of the student;
( b ) the title or short title of the dissertation;

( c ) the degree for which the dissertation is
submitted; and
( d ) the year of submission.
Maps, diagrams, graphs, printed material, etc. should be
bound with the dissertation, but if this is not possible, they should
be presented separately in special folders or volumes and
numbered.
Text. 8. The text must be typed on A4 sheets, on one side only, in
double spacing and with a margin of 40 mm to the left and at least
20mm top, bottom and right.
