DIPLOMA IN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES 
- DIP. ARCH - COURSE REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 167 of 2003.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Architectural Studies - Dip. Arch. - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Architecture and
Civil Engineering;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Architectural Studies - Dip.
Arch.;
"ECTS" means credits awarded according to the European Credit
Transfer System; and
"the Faculty" means the Faculty of Architecture and Civil
Engineering.
Applicability.
2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in terms of the
admission regulations of the University;
( b ) satisfy the special course requirements as stipulated in
regulation 4;
( c ) successfully complete the course of studies as
specified in regu1ation 10 and satisfy any other
requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Special course 
requirements.
4. Applicants may be registered for the course according to
the provisions of these regulations if they are in possession of the
degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering of the
University of Malta or have a qualification considered equivalent
by the Board obtained from an institution recognised by the Senate
for the purpose.
Course duration.
time study or three years of part-time study. The Board may allow
students to complete the course in not more than four years.

Programme of 
studies.
6. (1) The course shall comprise those areas of study/subjects
related to Architecture from the curriculum of the course leading to
the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Honours)
as directed by the Board.
(2) The Board shall draw up a catalogue of study units. The
catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and type of each
study unit, the credits assigned to each study unit, which study
units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study
units, and the methods of teaching and assessment. The Board shall
publish the catalogue for the course prior to its commencement,
following the approval of Senate.
Assessment and 
progress.
7. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, and
D. A failure shall be indicated with an F. Incomplete work due to
justifiable reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be
indicated with an I. In all other cases the results of uncompleted
study units shall be indicated as F.
(2) Students who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a re-
sit in that study unit once only. The maximum grade that may be
obtained following a re-sit shall be grade D.
Eligibility to 
proceed to the 
following year.
8. (1) Students shall be eligible to proceed to the following
year of the course on obtaining the 20 credits (40 FCTS credits)
assigned to each year of the course.
(2) The Board may allow students who obtain not less than 18
credits (36 ECTS credits) in a year to progress conditionally to the
next year of the course. Students who progress conditionally shall
be required to obtain the referred credit/s by the end of the
following academic year. Any study-unit may be referred to the
following year once only.
(3) Students who are not allowed to proceed to the next year of
the course may be allowed by the Board to repeat the year. Students
shall not be allowed to repeat a year more than once during the
course.
Long essay. 9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay of not
less than five thousand and not more than seven thousand words, on
a theme selected by them and related to the subjects covered during
the course, as approved by the Board.
(2) Students who fail the long essay shall be allowed to re-
submit it once within a period of six months.
Award of Diploma. 10. Students shall be considered to have successfully
completed the course on obtaining 60 credits (120 ECTS credits).
Final result. 11. (1) The final result of students shall take into account their
performance in all the study-units and in the long essay.
(2) In the final result for the Diploma the names of successful
students shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the
following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
