STATUTE I 10 - CENTRE FOR COMMUNICATION 
TECHNOLOGY STATUTE

Citation.
Communication Technology Statute.
Centre for 
Communication 
Technology.
1. There is hereby established a Centre for Communication
Technology (CCT) at the University of Malta, incorporating the
present Audio-Visual Laboratory, the Language Laboratory, the
audio and visual resources of the Library and the Educational
Technology Resources Centre.
Aims of the 
Centre.
2. The aims of the Centre shall be:
( a ) the provision of audio and visual media support in
both hardware and software to all Departments,
Institutes and staff of the University requiring it in the
fulfilment of their functions, and providing the
University authorities with consultancy and advice on
all matters related to A.V. facilities and applications;
( b ) the acquisition of materials, the proper maintenance
and facilitation of the use of a sound and vision
library, of language and video laboratories, and
educational technology workshops;
( c ) servicing the competent Faculties with courses and
other requirements (including co-ordination of the
Communication courses), carrying out research and
otherwise promoting scientific work in the area of
communication studies;
( d ) collaborating with other institutions in the provision of
training and assistance with project work in the A.V.
field.
Board.
(2) The Board shall consist of the following:
Chairman: the Rector or his deputy;
Vice-Chairman: the Director of the Centre;
a representative of each of:
the Faculty of Arts;
the Faculty of Education;
the Institute of Linguistics;
the Mediterranean Institute;
the Library; and

not more than four other co-opted members.
(3) The functions of the Board shall be:
( a ) to determine the policy of the Centre with regard to its
aims;
( b ) to oversee the financial administration of the Centre;
( c ) to ensure collaboration with other bodies, local and
foreign, necessary for achieving the aims of the
Centre.
Director and staff. 4. (1) The Centre shall have a Director and staff.
(2) The Director shall be appointed by the Council of the
University of Malta for a period of three years, after a call for
applications, from among the academic staff of the University.
(3) The Director shall be responsible for the day-to-day
management of the Centre and the implementation of policy as
determined by the Board.
(4) The Director shall prepare the annual budget of the Centre
and submit it to the Board for approval. The Director will also
submit a financial statement to the Council and an annual report to
Senate and Council on the activities of the Centre.
(5) Academic staff in Communications and other areas of
study shall be appointed by the Council of the University of Malta
on the recommendation of the Board.
(6) Administrative and technical staff shall be appointed by
the Board.
Support services. 5. The Centre (CCT) shall offer instructional support services
to the University, Faculties and Institutes as requested and
appropriate. In particular, the Centre shall provide:
( a ) the use of common facilities, equipment and its
maintenance together with coordination and
supervision of studies in the area of Communication
Studies;
( b ) the Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) with office
space, use of common facilities, equipment and its
maintenance for the production of materials as
required by the CDL in the fulfilment of its statute;
( c ) the Institute of Linguistics (IL) with office space, the
use of common facilities and a language laboratory
complex (including equipment and its maintenance)
for the fulfilment of its aims as prescribed in its
statute;
( d ) the Faculty of Education with office space, use of
common facilities, equipment and its maintenance for
an Educational Technology Resources Area for the
design and implementation of instructional materials;
( e ) the University with an annex to the main Library to
circulate the audio and visual materials required by
teaching members and students of the University.

Treasurer of the 
Centre.
6. The Finance Officer of the University of Malta shall be the
Treasurer of the Centre.
Amendments.
and shall require the approval of the Council of the University of
Malta.
