DEGREE REGULATIONS

Citation.
M.Phil. - Degree Regulations.
Degree of Master 
of Philosophy.
1. The Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil - will be
awarded on the result of the examination of a thesis and an oral
examination in the field of research relating to the thesis.
Course.

2. (1) The course leading to the Degree of Master of
Philosophy - M.Phil. - is open to candidates who satisfy the entry
requirements laid down in the relative Bye-Laws.
(2) Applications from candidates in possession of exceptional
experiential qualifications and notwithstanding that the candidates
are not in possession of the qualifications referred to in
subregulation (1) may also be considered:

Provided that applications submitted in terms of
subregulation (2) may only be accepted following the approval of
the Senate acting on the advice of the Senate’s Ph.D. Committee
appointed in terms of regulation 3 of the Regulations for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.
Application to 
Faculty Board.

3. (1) A candidate who fulfils the entry requirements shall
apply to the Board of the Faculty or Institute for permission to
register for the Degree. Such a candidate shall:
( a ) provide details of the proposed research work; and
( b ) furnish a written recommendation that such work is
feasible from a person directly concerned in the
running of the institution, laboratory or clinical unit
where the research work is intended to be carried out.

(2) A candidate’s application must be first accepted by the
Board of the Faculty or Institute prior to its submission for
approval of the Senate acting on the advice of the Committee set up
in terms of regulation 3 of the Regulations for the Degree of Doctor
of Philosophy - Ph.D. The Board of the Faculty or Institute in
recommending the candidate’s application shall nominate a
supervisor for the proposed research work.
(3) A candidate who wishes to be considered under regulation
5 (part-time studies) shall be required to furnish full details of the
amount of time the candidate is able to dedicate to his research
work.

Full-time studies.

4. A candidate admitted to register for the Degree shall be
required to spend not less than fifteen but not more than twenty-
four months after registration in full-time studies and research in
the chosen subject.
Part-time studies.

5. A candidate may, by permission of the Board of the
Faculty or Institute, satisfy the requirements of regulation 4 by
part-time study or research, provided that such a candidate shall be
normally required to spend not less than thirty but not more than
forty-eight months in part-time studies and research in the chosen
subject.
Thesis. 6. A candidate shall present his thesis within three months of
completion of his research studies prescribed in regulations 4 or 5.
In exceptional circumstances a candidate may by permission of
Senate present his thesis at a later date as may be determined by
Senate.
Certificate. 7. Every candidate shall obtain from the supervisor, a
certificate stating that he has satisfactorily studied for the
prescribed period. This certificate shall be submitted before or at
the same time as the thesis.
Submission of 
thesis.
8. A candidate who wishes to submit his thesis for the
consideration of the examiners shall:
( a ) register for the examination; and
( b ) deliver the thesis to the Registrar not later than the
first day of June or December immediately following
such registration.
Submitted work. 9. The greater portion of the work submitted must have been
done after the registration of the student as a candidate for the
Degree.

10. Each thesis shall be examined by an Examining Board of
three members appointed for the purpose, including a Chairman, an
external examiner, and another member, provided that the oral
examination of the thesis shall be conducted by at least three
examiners, and provided that the supervisor is precluded from
being an examiner but is invited to attend as an observer during the
oral examination. The candidate shall be required to defend the
thesis orally before the Board.

11. After examining the thesis, the Examining Board may refer
it back to the candidate for revision. In such cases, the candidate
shall apply to the Board of the Faculty or Institute for permission to
submit the revised thesis for examination. The Board of the Faculty
or Institute shall be guided in its decision by the recommendation
of the Examining Board but in all cases the revised thesis shall be
submitted for examination within six months of the original thesis
being referred back to the candidate. Such permission shall he
granted only once.
Oral examination.

12. A candidate who fails to satisfy the Examining Board in
the oral examination may, at the Board’s discretion and with the
permission of the Board of the Faculty or Institute, be re-examined
orally within a period of six months. Such permission will be
granted only once.

13. (1) A candidate for the Degree may, after completing
twelve months of full-time work, apply to register for the Degree of
Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - with the same project. The Board of
the Faculty or Institute shall consider such application and make its
recommendation through the Ph.D. Committee to Senate, after
consulting the supervisor.

(2) If such an application is accepted by Senate, the candidate
shall comply with the Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy - Ph.D. - but the work already done for the Degree will
count towards the requirements for the Ph.D. Degree as laid in
those Regulations.
