REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Education (Children with Special Needs) - Dip. Ed. - Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the course" means the course leading in the Diploma;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Education (Children with
Special Needs) - Dip. Ed.
Applicability.
academic year 1994/95.
Eligibility.
must have:
( a ) been registered as regular students;
( b ) completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfied all other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes and regulations of the University.
Registration.
for a course of studies leading to the Diploma or to a Certificate in
Education of Children with Special Needs, according to the
provisions of these regulations, if they are in possession of a
teaching qualification recognised by the Faculty Board and have a
minimum of one year teaching experience.
Course 
programme.
5. (1) The course of studies leading to the Diploma shall
extend over a period of two calendar years part-time study.
(2) A candidate may not take the Final Examination earlier
than 2 years or later than 4 years from first registration except in
special circumstances with the approval of Senate.
(3) The Course shall consist of study-units to which not less
than thirty credits shall be assigned.
(4) The Course shall be organized in two Parts, that in Part I
and Part II, each Part extending over a period of one calendar year
of part-time study.
(5) Part I shall be undertaken in the first calendar year of the
Course.

(6) Part I shall consist of study-units to which not less than 15
credits shall be assigned, in the following modules:
Module A: Disability and its contexts
Module B: Curricular provisions and special needs
Module C: Strategies for individualizing provisions
Module D: Promoting support networks
Module E: Research methods
Module F: Practical.
(7) A catalogue of study-units in each module, with the credits
assigned to each, shall be published before the start of each course.
(8) Candidates who successfully complete Part I of the course
shall be awarded an overall grade A, B, C or D in descending order
of merit.
(9) Candidates who opt not to proceed to Part II of the course
shall be awarded a Certificate of completion of Part I if they have
completed successfully all the compulsory units for the first
calendar year and obtained a minimum of 14 credits.
(10) Part II of the course shall consist of study-units to which
not less than 15 credits shall be assigned in the same Modules as
for Part I but applied to one particular shall form of special or
inclusive educational provision.
(11) The Faculty Board shall offer optional areas of
specialisation for Part II which shall be published before the
commencement of Part II of the course.
(12) Candidates who intend to pursue studies in a particular
area of specialisation which is not offered in a particular year may
interrupt their course after Part I and rejoin Part II of the course
when the relevant option is offered.
(13) Candidates shall be allowed to register for Part II of the
course if they have successfully completed Part I with a minimum
overall grade B or better.
(14) The Faculty Board may allow other candidates to register
for Part II of the course if they have obtained from the University
of Malta or another university a qualification equivalent to Part I of
the course, with a minimum of grade B or better provided that the
Board may require such candidates to complete particular study-
units from Part I successfully.
(15) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma,
candidates must obtain a minimum of 14 credits in Part II of the
course.
(16) The Faculty Board, on the advice of the Board of Studies,
may establish which study-units a candidate may take to complete
the appropriate Part of the course.
Assessment. 6. (1) Credits shall be assessed according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F
signifies a failure.
(2) Candidates who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a

re-sit in that unit once only. Credits obtained following a re-sit
shall carry the minimum pass grade if the candidate is successful.
Examinations.
credits for Part I as prescribed in regulation 5 shall be required to
sit for an Examination for Part I of the course.
(2) The Examination for Part I shall be held at the end of the
first calendar year of the course and shall consist of one synoptic
paper.
(3) Candidates who have obtained the minimum number of
credits for Part II as prescribed in regulation 5 shall be required to
sit for a final examination which shall be held at the end of Part II
of the course, and shall consist of two synoptic papers.
(4) Examination papers in both Parts shall be marked in the
same way as credits.
(5) Candidates who fail the Examination for Part I or the final
examination shall be allowed to take a re-sit once within a period of
twelve months from the end of each relevant Part of the course. In
such cases the highest grade awarded shall be the minimum pass
grade.
Final results.

(2) In the final results the names of candidates who qualify for
the Diploma shall be published in alphabetical order.
