MANAGEMENT - DIP. ENV. MGT. - COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postgraduate
Diploma in Environmental Management - Dip. Env. Mgt. Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies constituted under
regulation 4;
"the course" means the course leading to the Postgraduate
Diploma in Environmental Management - Dip. Env. Mgt.;
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in
Environmental Management - Dip. Env. Mgt.
Applicability.
February, 1994 or later.
Qualifications for 
admission.
3. A candidate shall be eligible to apply for registration in the
course if he has:
( a ) obtained a first degree in a subject approved by the
Board from the University of Malta or an equivalent
qualification from a foreign University; or
( b ) if a mature student, according to regulation 2.2 of the
Admission Regulations, possesses an exceptional
degree of experience in the field of environmental
studies or related disciplines.
The Board.
the recommendation of the Board of the International Environment
Institute. It shall consist of a Chairman, a Course Coordinator, two
members of the academic staff and two students. Other members
may be coopted by the Board if the need arises.
Duration.
time study.
Course structure.
an integrated project to which a total of not less than 24 credits
shall be assigned. It shall be divided into three parts as follows:
( a ) Orientation study-units
( b ) Core study-units
( c ) Integrated project.

(2) The orientation study-units shall be divided in modules as
follows:
( a ) Natural Sciences module consisting of study-units to
which not less than 4 credits are assigned;
( b ) Human Sciences module consisting of study-units to
which not less than 4 credits are assigned;
( c ) Quantitative technique study-unit.
(3) Candidates shall be directed to follow study-units in the
Natural Sciences/Humanities/Quantitative Techniques modules or
any combination of the three by the Board depending on the
candidates’ academic background. Normally, candidates with a
humanities background shall be directed to follow study-units in
the Natural Sciences module and candidates with a science
background shall be directed to follow study-units in the Human
Sciences module. Candidates shall be required to obtain not less
than 4 credits in the orientation study-units.
(4) The core study-units shall be divided in three modules,
consisting of study-units to which a total of not less than 15 credits
shall be assigned. There shall be modules in:
( a ) Environmental Issues
( b ) Environmental Planning
( c ) Environmental Management.
Candidates shall be required to complete all the core study-
units.
(5) The candidates shall be required to work on a project to
which five credits shall be assigned and shall be designed in such a
way as to enable them to make use of their newly acquired basic
and coordinative skills in real situations. There shall be no formal
programme of instruction but each candidate shall be expected to
attend tutorials regularly with the tutors responsible for the project.
Each supervisor and project title shall be subject to approval by the
Board.
Course assessment. 7. (1) Assessment of each course unit in the orientation
course and in the core course shall be in accordance with criteria
established by the Board.
(2) The Integrated Project shall be assessed on the basis of a
log of the work carried out, the graphic and written material
presented and a verbal presentation in the presence of appointed
examiners and invited experts.
(3) External examiners may be asked to assist in any or all of
the assessments and in the examination of the Integrated Project.
Results. 8. (1) The assessment of each study-unit in the orientation
modules, in the modules in the core course and the Integrated
Project shall be graded as A, B, C, D, or Fail.
(2) Candidates shall be allowed to proceed from the
orientation to the core modules and Integrated Project only if they
obtain a minimum of grade D in each unit.

(3) A candidate who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to
resit for the assessment procedure of the study-unit, in which case
the maximum grade he can obtain is a D.
Completion of 
course.
9. (1) Candidates shall be considered as having satisfactorily
completed the course if:
( a ) they have successfully followed both orientation and
core courses and have satisfied the examiners in the
assessment;
( b ) they have satisfied the examiners in the Integrated
Project.
(2) Candidates who fail to satisfy all the course requirements
at any stage as stated above, may be given the opportunity by the
Board to fulfil the remaining requirements within a specified time
after the publication of results. In this case, the respective mark/
grade awarded shall be the minimum one.
Award and 
classification of the 
Diploma.
10. The final classification of the Diploma for each successful
candidate shall be based on the results obtained in each part of the
Course and published as one result under the following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
