MASTER OF ARTS IN HUMAN RESOURCE 
DEVELOPMENT - M.A. - DEGREE COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Master of Arts in
Human Resource Development - M.A. - Degree Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the course" means the course of studies and research leading to
the Degree of Master of Arts in Human Resource Development -
M.A.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Arts in Human
Resource Development - M A.;
"the Faculty Board" means the Board of the Faculty of
Economics, Management and Accountancy.
Applicability.
1994 or later.
Qualifications for 
admission.
3. (1) Candidates for admission to the Course shall be:
( a ) persons possessing a university degree with First or
Second Upper Class Honours in any related subject
approved by the Faculty Board for this purpose; or
( b ) persons possessing a university degree or a
professional qualification recognised by the Faculty
Board for the purpose of admission to this course
together with a minimum of four years work
experience at senior level in an area of responsability
for human resources.
(2) Before being admitted to register for the course all
applicants must be approved by the Faculty Board on the
recommendation of the Board of Studies constituted under
regulation 5 as possessing the training, knowledge and capabilities
required for pursuing the course with profit.
Course duration.

(2) In exceptional circumstances a candidate may be allowed
by the Faculty Board to complete the course programme within a
maximum period of three years after registration.
(3) A candidate may, be permission of the Faculty Board,
register on a part-time basis provided that, in any case, such

candidate spends at least the first semester of the course on a full-
time study basis. Any subsequent period spent in part-time study
shall be considered equivalent to half the same period of full-time
study as specified in subregulations ( 1) and (2).
Course of studies. 5. (1) The course shall be divided into two parts, Part One
and Part Two and shall consist of study-units, practical experience,
a dissertation and the Final Examinations.
(2) Part One shall normally be completed in the first year of
the Course during which all candidates must obtain a minimum of
20 credits in the following areas:
( a ) Strategic Human Resource Management
( b ) Organisational Culture and Change
( c ) People and Work
( d ) Employee Relations
( e ) Training and Development
( f ) Other elective areas to be specified by the Faculty
Board from time to time.
(3) The specific study-units and any pre-requisites shall be
determined by the Faculty Board at the start of each course.
(4) A candidate who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit
may be allowed to be re-tested only once. In the reassessment the
candidate’s credit will be graded either D or Fail.
(5) Part Two shall normally be completed during the second
year of the course during which candidates shall:
( a ) undergo a period of monitored practical experience in
Human Resources for a minimum of six months in an
approved work environment; and
( b ) write a dissertation of between 30,000 and 50,000
words on a subject approved by the Faculty Board.
(6) The Board of Studies shall be appointed by the Faculty
Board from among members of the academic staff and shall consist
of a Chairman, a Course Coordinator and two other members. Its
functions shall be to make recommendations to the Faculty Board
on the admission of candidates as prescribed in regulation 3(2) and
generally to advise the Faculty Board on the administration and
management of the course. It shall also appoint an academic
adviser for each candidate during Part Two of the course.
(7) The academic adviser shall require the candidate to report
to him as often as he deems necessary and shall report to the Board
of Studies and subsequently to the Faculty Board any candidate
whose progress he considers unsatisfactory.
(8) The dissertation shall be on a subject approved by the
Faculty Board and shall be an original work consisting either in a
record of original research or in an ordered and critical expression
of existing data. It shall be written, typed and bound in accordance
with the criteria established by the Faculty Board for this purpose.
(9) A candidate who, after due warning given in writing,

persistently fail. to attend lectures and/or tutorials or otherwise
does not carry out his academic duties without adequate
justification may be debarred by Senate, following a
recommendation of the Faculty Board, from continuing the course.
Final 
examinations.
6. (1) At the end of Part One of the course and after obtaining
the required credits, candidates shall be required to sit for the final
written examinations.
(2) The final written examinations shall consist of four papers
which must be passed in order to enable a candidate to proceed to
Part Two of the course.
(3) Candidates who fail in not more than two papers of the
final written examinations may be allowed to sit for a
supplementary examination in the following session in the paper or
papers failed. Candidates may be allowed to repeat the final
examinations only once.
(4) After completing Parts One and Two of the course
candidates shall submit the dissertation for examination.
(5) A  viva voce  examination on the dissertation may also be
required.

qualify for the Degree and their names shall be published in
alphabetical order classified as follows:
