COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postgraduate
Diploma and Degree of Master of Science in Conservation
Technology for Masonry Buildings Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute for Masonry and
Construction Research;
"the course" means the course leading to the Postgraduate
Diploma and Degree of Master of Science in Conservation
Technology for Masonry Buildings - P.G. Dip. Cons. - M.Sc.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Science in
Conservation Technology for Masonry Buildings;
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Conservation
Technology for Masonry Buildings.
Applicability.
October 1994 or later.
Qualifications for 
admission.
3. (1) A candidate shall be eligible for registration in the
Course if he is in possession of at least a second class honours
degree in a discipline related to architecture and civil engineering,
material science, chemistry or physics, obtained from the
University of Malta or from a foreign University or Institute
recognised by the University of Malta.
(2) The Board may, in special cases, allow candidates who do
not satisfy the foregoing requirements to apply for registration.
Such applications must include evidence that the candidate has
attained the level of proficiency prescribed in subregulation (1).
The Board may, in each case, require additional qualifications,
including the passing of one or more examinations.
(3) No candidate shall be admitted to the course unless he is
fluent in the English language.
(4) All candidates shall be, in the first instance, registered for
the Diploma. Candidates shall be allowed to register for the Degree
if they satisfy regulation 7(1).

Course of studies. 4. (1) The course shall consist of the following modules:
( a ) Theory, Methodology and Policies of Conservation
( b ) Construction Materials and Processes
( c ) Environment and Monitoring
( d ) Degradation Mechanisms
( e ) Interventions
( f ) Case studies and Projects.
(2) Study areas shall compromise a number of study-units to
which a total of 30 credits shall be assigned.
(3) A catalogue of study-units with the number of credits
assigned to each unit shall be published by the Board before the
commencement of the course.
(4) The Diploma course shall have a duration of one academic
year or full-time study, or its equivalent in part-time study.
Assessments. 5. (1) The assessment of each study-unit shall be carried out
by the respective lecturer or lecturers involved in teaching, together
with the Course Co-ordinator and the Director of the Institute, as
may be established by the Board from time to time.
(2) In the assessment of study-units pass grades shall be
awarded on a scale from A to D, A being the highest grade and F
indicating a Fail.
(3) A candidate who obtains a Grade F in any study-unit may
be allowed to sit for a second time the assessment procedure of that
study-unit. The re-assessment procedure shall be determined by the
lecturer giving the study-unit, in consultation with the Course Co-
ordinator and the Director of the Institute. If the candidate fails in
the re-assessment he may be allowed to register again for the entire
study-unit or follow any other instructions issued at the discretion
of the Board of the Institute. If successful at the second or further
attempt the candidate shall be awarded a Grade D.
(4) A final comprehensive examination shall be held at the end
of the study-units, normally in June. The Examination shall consist
of two written papers. Candidates may be required to attend a viva
voce examination.
(5) The final results shall be published after the final
comprehensive examination and the final marks shall be allocated
as follows:
Coursework 60%
Final Comprehensive Examination 40%.
(6) The final grades for the successful candidates shall be
awarded on a scale from A to D, A being the highest grade and
designated as "Passed with Distinction". F indicates Failed.
(7) A candidate who fails shall be given permission to re-sit
the final comprehensive examination once only. If successful, the
candidate shall be awarded the minimum grade.

successful in the final results published in accordance with
regulation 5(6), unless, being eligible, they opt to proceed to the
course leading to the Degree.
DEGREE COURSE
Course of studies.
course leading to the Degree if he has obtained an overall grade A
or B in the final result published for the Diploma in accordance
with regulation 5(6). In such case the candidate shall be required to
register for the Degree within the three months following the
publication of such final result.
(2) Candidates admitted to the Degree course shall be required
to write a dissertation on an original research project.
(3) Candidates shall submit the proposed title of their
dissertation and an outline of the research work to be performed for
its purposes upon registration for the Degree. The research work
shall be subject to the approval of the Board, which shall also
nominate a supervisor for each candidate.
(4) The dissertation shall contain the results of the research
project, a critical review of the relevant literature and a critical
discussion of the results. The dissertation shall be not less than
35,000 words long, and not exceed 40,000 words, and shall be
submitted not earlier than six months and not later than eighteen
months from the date of the acceptance of the title.
(5) The dissertation shall be examined by an Examining Board
appointed by Senate on the recommendations of the Board. The
candidate shall be required to defend his dissertation.
(6) If the dissertation does not reach the required standard the
candidate may be required to amend and re-submit it within a
period not exceeding one year.
(7) The final results of candidates admitted under
subregulation (1) shall be published after the completion of the
dissertation examination. The final marks shall be allocated as
follows:
Diploma Coursework 20%
Diploma Final Comprehensive Examination  20%
Dissertation 60%.
(8) The names of successful candidates who qualify for the
award of the Degree shall be published in alphabetical order,
classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
(9) Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners for the award
of the Degree shall be eligible to the award of the Diploma.
