BACHELOR OF COMMUNICATIONS DEGREE 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of
Communications Degree Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Bachelor
of Communications;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Communications.
Applicability.
1995 or later.
Eligibility.
( a ) be registered as a regular student in accordance with
the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) have registered for and successfully completed the full
course of studies as provided in these regulations;
( c ) have passed the final examinations for the Degree; and
( d ) have satisfied all the other requirements laid down in
these regulations and any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Duration.

(2) The Board may allow a student who for good and sufficient
reasons cannot complete the course within three years to extend it
by another year.
(3) A student may not complete the course earlier than three
years or later than four years from the date of his first admission to
the course, except in special circumstances with the permission of
Senate.
Course of studies.
less than 64 credits shall be assigned and shall be divided in two
parts as follows:
( a ) Part One normally extends over a period of two years
and shall be common to both the Bachelor of
Communications and the Bachelor of Communications
(Honours) courses;
( b ) Part Two shall normally extend over a period of one

year.
(2) On registration for the course a student shall be required to
register for one main area or two subsidiary areas of study.
(3) The Board may limit the available options or possible
combinations of areas of study which can be chosen as main or
subsidiary areas of study.
(4) The Board may allow a student to change the main area or
any of the subsidiary areas of study before beginning the second
year of the course, provided that such change is compatible with
these regulations.
(5) To complete Part One of the course and proceed to Part
Two a student must obtain a minimum of 45 credits to include:
( a ) 16 credits in Communication Studies;
( b ) 3 credits in each of the following subjects:
Psychology
Social Studies
Philosophy
Maltese or English;
( c ) a total of 12 credits in either a main area or in the two
subsidiary areas combined, chosen from areas
approved by the Board on the recommendation of the
Board of Studies; and
( d ) 5 optional credits offered by other Faculties or
Institutes and approved by the Board of Studies.
(6) A student who by the end of Part One of the course
satisfies the necessary requirements may opt to register for the
course leading to the Bachelor of Communications (Honours)
degree, before the commencement of the third year.
(7) To complete a course of studies for the Degree a student
must obtain:
( a ) at least 24 credits in Communication Studies;
( b ) 3 credits in each of the following subjects:
Philosophy
Psychology
Social Studies
Maltese or English;
( c ) either 20 credits in the main area or 10 credits in each
of the two subsidiary areas of study; and
( d ) 8 optional credits that may include study-units offered
for credits outside the Faculty of Education and
approved by the Board of Studies.
(8) A catalogue of study-units with the credits assigned to each
will be published before the start of each academic year.
(9) The Board may exempt a student from the requirement of
obtaining a credit certificate for a particular unit if the candidate

obtains from a University, or an Institution recognised by Senate
for the purpose, a qualification which, in the opinion of the Board,
is equivalent to that required for the credit concerned:
Provided that:
( a ) a student may not be exempted from more than one-
third of the whole course;
( b ) exemptions are allowed only in Part One of the course.
Progress.
required to register for a number of study-units for which a total of
not less than 19 and not more than 26 credits are assigned. During
Part Two the minimum number of credits shall be 16 and the
maximum 26.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F indicates
failure.
(3) A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit shall
be allowed to take a re-sit once. In the re-sit, the student’s credit
will be graded on a "Pass" or "Fail" basis and if successful, the
student is awarded a grade "D".
(4) A student who fails to obtain 19 credits during any of the
first two years or 16 credits during the third year of the course shall
be required to extend his studies by one year, except in special
circumstances and with the permission of Senate. A student shall
not be allowed to continue the course if he has to repeat the year
more than once, be it the same year or subsequent years.
Final 
examinations.
7. (1) On completing the course of studies a student shall be
required to sit for the final examinations in Communication Studies
and in the main or in the two subsidiary areas of study taken.
(2) Final examinations shall be held once annually, normally
in May-June, and shall consist of four examinations: two in
Communication Studies and two in the main area or one
examination in each subsidiary area of study. A  viva voce
examination may also be held.
(3) To satisfy the final examinations requirement a student
must be successful in each paper.
(4) A student who fails in any of the four papers shall be
allowed a supplementary session in the failed paper or papers once.
(5) The grade obtained through a supplementary session of the
final examinations shall carry the minimum pass grade or F.
Final results.
shall take into account the candidate’s performance at the final
examination and the grades obtained during the course.
(2) The final examinations carry sixty per cent of the
weighting for the grading of the final result. The other forty per
cent shall be calculated on the basis of the overall average of the
credits obtained. If more than 64 credits are obtained by the student
the best 64 credits satisfying regulation 5(7) shall be taken into
account.

(3) In the final results the names of candidates who qualify for
the award of the Degree shall be published in alphabetical order in
a list divided into categories I, IIA, IIB and III.
