MASTER OF ARTS IN MARKETING EDUCATION - 
M.A. - DEGREE COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Master of Arts in
Marketing - M.A. - and Master of Arts in Marketing Education -
M.A. - Degree Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies for the Degree
appointed by the Faculty Board;
"the course" means, as the case may require, the course of studies
and research leading to the Degree of Master of Arts in Marketing -
M.A. - or to the Degree of Master of Arts in Marketing Education -
M.A.;
"the Degree" means, as the case may require, the Degree of
Master of Arts in Marketing - M.A. - or the Degree of Master of
Arts in Marketing Education M.A.;
"Faculty Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics,
Management and Accountancy.
Applicability.
1995 or later.
Qualifications for 
admission.
3. (1) Candidates for admission to the Master of Arts in
Marketing Course shall be:
( a ) persons possessing a university degree with First or
Upper Second Class Honours in any related subject
approved by the Faculty Board for this purpose; or
( b ) persons possessing a university degree with Lower
Second Class Honours or a professional qualification
recognised by the University of Malta for the purpose
of admittance to this course together with a minimum
of three years work experience at senior level in an
area of responsibility for the marketing function.
(2) Candidates for admission to the Master of Arts in
Marketing Education course shall be:
( a ) persons possessing a university degree with First or
Upper Second Class Honours in any related subject
approved by the University of Malta for this purpose;
or 
( b ) persons possessing a university degree or a

professional qualification recognised by the University
of Malta for the purpose of admission to this course
together with a minimum of four years teaching
experience in a business subject.
(3) Before being admitted to register for the course all
applicants must be approved by the Faculty Board on the
recommendation of the Board of Studies as possessing the
qualifications, knowledge and capabilities required for pursuing the
course with profit.
Registration. 4. A candidate must register on the official form within the
time specified by the Office of the Registrar.
Course duration. 5. (1) The duration of the course shall be twelve calendar
months of full-time study.
(2) In exceptional circumstances a candidate may be allowed
by the Faculty Board to complete the course programme within a
maximum period of two years after registration.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course shall consist of two parts: Part One and Part
Two.
(2) Part One of the course shall be common to both the
Marketing and the Marketing Education degrees and shall extend
over two academic semesters. It shall consist of study-units for
which not less than twenty credits shall be assigned in the
following modules:
Consumer and Organisational Buying Behaviour
Marketing Research
The Components of Marketing
Media Production and Management
Specialised Marketing
Marketing Strategy.
(3) Part Two of the course leading to the Marketing Degree
shall consist of a supervised research project or a dissertation on an
approved subject for which not less than six credits shall be
assigned.
(4) Part Two of the course leading to the Marketing Education
Degree shall consist of two study-units in the pedagogy of
marketing for which not less than three credits shall be assigned
and a written dissertation on an approved subject for which not less
than three credits shall be assigned.
(5) A catalogue of study-units and the credits assigned to each
study-unit shall be published before the start of every semester.
Some study-units may be indicated as compulsory and others as
optional. The study-units may involve supervised practical work.
This practical work shall be considered as an essential component
of the course for which credits shall be assigned.
Continuous 
assessment.
7. (1) Candidates shall be assessed in the study-units covered
in accordance with the criteria established by the Faculty Board.
(2) The following grades shall be used in the assignment of

ARTS IN MARKETING EDUCATION - M.A. - DEGREE COURSE [ S.L.327.81 3
credits: A, B, C, D, and F, in descending order of merit, with F
indicating failure.
(3) A candidate who fails in a credit may be allowed to be re-
assessed once. In the case of re-assessment the maximum grade a
candidate can obtain shall be D.
Attendance.
persistently fails to attend lectures and/or tutorials or otherwise
does not carry out his academic duties without justification may be
debarred by Senate, following a recommendation by the Faculty
Board, from sitting for any or all of the examinations.
Examinations.
a minimum of twenty credits a candidate shall be required to sit for
the final written examination.
(2) The final written examination shall consist of four papers,
one of which may be a ‘take-home’ type paper.
(3) In order to satisfy the final written examination
requirements the candidate must obtain a pass grade in all the four
papers.
(4) Candidates who fail in only one paper of the final written
examination shall be allowed to sit for a supplementary
examination in that paper on a date to be decided by the Faculty
Board. Candidates who fail in not more than three papers of the
final written examination may be allowed by the Faculty Board to
sit for a supplementary examination of the whole final written
examination on a date, being not later than six months after the
publication of the results, to be decided by the Faculty Board.
Candidates may re-sit the final written examination only once and
the maximum grade obtained in the re-sit examination shall be D.
Project/
Dissertation.
10. (1) During Part Two of the course candidates reading for
the Marketing Degree shall be required to complete a research
project or a dissertation with a marketing focus.
(2) Candidates reading for the Marketing Education Degree
shall be required to complete a dissertation which must have either
an education or marketing focus. Those choosing one area shall be
required to show the linkages with, and the implications for, the
other area.
(3) A supervisor shall be appointed by the Faculty Board for
every project or dissertation. The supervisor shall require the
candidate to report to him as often as he deems necessary and shall
report to the Board of Studies and subsequently to the Faculty
Board a candidate whose progress he considers unsatisfactory.
(4) Candidates reading for the Marketing Degree must submit
the proposed title and outline of the project or dissertation for
approval by the Faculty Board not later than the end of the seventh
month of the course.
(5) Candidates reading for the Marketing Education Degree
must submit the title and outline of the dissertation for approval by
the Faculty Board not later than the end of the ninth month of the
course.

(6) The project or the dissertation must satisfy the Faculty
Board as regards format and presentation.
(7) The project or dissertation to be submitted according to
subregulation (4) must be 15,000 to 20,000 words in length
(excluding headings, tables, references, and appendices). The
dissertation to be submitted under subregulation (5) must be 10,000
to 15,000 words in length (excluding headings, tables, references,
and appendices). The Faculty Board may extend the length of the
project or dissertation on the recommendation of the supervisor.
(8) The project or the dissertation must be submitted in its
final form not later than the twelfth month from the commencement
of the course unless an extension is granted by the Faculty Board.
(9) A  viva voce  examination on the project or the dissertation
may also be held.
(10) Failure in the project or dissertation may require re-
submission or constitute an outright failure depending on the extent
of the failure. The decision in this regard shall be taken by the
Faculty Board on the recommendation of the Board of Studies.
Final grading. 11. (1) The final grading for the Marketing Degree shall be
based on:
( a ) the study-units - 40 per cent
( b ) the final written examination - 30 per cent
( c ) the project/dissertation - 30 per cent.
(2) The final grading for the M.A. in Marketing Education
degree shall be based on:
( a ) the study-units - 50 per cent
( b ) the final written examination - 30 per cent
( c ) the project/dissertation - 20 per cent.
(3) The names of the candidates who have passed the Degree
shall be published in alphabetical order in two categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
