BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF 
PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
ENGINEERING

LEGAL NOTICE 10 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Faculty of Engineering.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy- Ph.D.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.;
and
"the M.Phil. / Ph.D. Committee" means the Committee appointed
by Senate as prescribed in regulation 4 of the Doctor of Philosophy
- Ph.D. - and Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - Degrees Course
Regulations.
Applicability.

Registration.
candidate shall normally be required to register in the first instance
for the course leading to the degree of Master of Philosophy. Only
in exceptional circumstances shall a candidate be considered for
direct registration for the Degree.
Transfer of 
registration.
4. The transfer of the registration from the course leading to
the degree of Master of Philosophy to the Degree may be permitted
after not less than twelve months of full-time study or twenty-four
months of part-time study for the degree of Master of Philosophy
have elapsed. Such a transfer shall be allowed on the
recommendation of the board appointed as prescribed in regulation
9(1)( c ) of the Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - and Master of
Philosophy - M.Phil. - Degrees Course Regulations, and of the
Board, and with the approval of Senate, acting on the advice of the
M.Phil. / Ph.D. Committee:
Provided that. for students registered prior to October
1997, the transfer shall be allowed on the recommendation of the
students’ supervisor and an internal examiner.
Written 
application.
5. The student shall submit a written application requesting
the transfer to the Degree, together with a summary of the work
carried out by him, preferably in the form of a technical paper. The
Board would give favourable consideration to work published or
accepted for publication in prestigious technical journals.

Research proposal. 6. The student shall also submit a research proposal for the
Degree which shall indicate clearly the research questions in the
field to be addressed, the hypotheses to be tested, and the
methodology to the adopted in dealing with the research issues.
Where necessary, the student may be required to demonstrate
competence in those skills required by the nature of the
investigation.
Requirements for 
the Degree.
7. A thesis for the Degree shall report the discovery of new
facts and/or demonstrate that the student has exercised independent
critical power in reaching the reported conclusions In both respects,
the student shall indicate clearly the extent to which the thesis
embodies the results of his own research and observations, and to
what extent the investigation advances the study of the subject.
Research seminars. 8. The Faculty of Engineering attaches great importance to
the association of Degree students with other research students and
members of staff. Students shall therefore be required to participate
fully in the Faculty’s research seminars.
Changes to title of 
thesis.
9. Any changes to the title of the thesis shall be approved by
the Board, on the written recommendation of the student’s
supervisor, and submitted for approval of Senate, acting on the
advice of the M.Phil. / Ph.D. Committee.
Thesis format and 
presentation.
10. The thesis shall not normally exceed 60,000 words
exclusive of appendices, bibliographies, glossaries and footnotes.
Format. 11. The thesis shall normally be typewritten or printed on good
quality white paper, on one side only, according to the following
specifications:
( a ) the size of the paper shall be A4;
( b ) the margins shall be at least 20 mm top, bottom and
right and 40 mm to the left; the text to be in double
line spacing; and
( c ) the binding to be in cloth (preferably black), with stiff
boards and good quality end papers, with lettering
(preferably in gold) on front and spine showing:
(i) the name of the student;
(ii) the title or short title of the thesis;
(iii) the degree for which the thesis is submitted; and
(iv) the year of submission.
Maps, diagrams, graphs, printed material, diskettes, etc.,
should be bound with the thesis, but if this is not possible they
should be presented separately in special folders or volumes and
numbered.
Abstract of thesis. 12. A short abstract of the thesis of not more than 500 words
should be bound with each copy submitted to the University.
Copies. 13. A student shall be required to submit three copies of the
thesis, adequately bound, for examination. Within six weeks of
passing the examination of the thesis, the student shall be required
to submit two copies of the thesis, one of which shall be retained in
the University Library and another one in the custody of the
department concerned.
