BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M. PHIL. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
ENGINEERING

LEGAL NOTICE 11 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M. Phil - in the Faculty of Engineering.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Master of
Philosophy - M.Phil.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy -
M.Phil.
Applicability.

Registration.
Honours degree (normally not lower than a Second Class Upper
Division) in:
( a ) Engineering; or
( b ) Science / Mathematics; or
( c ) an equivalent degree qualification as approved by
Senate on the recommendation of the Board.
Qualifications.
obtained the qualifications specified in bye-law 3:
( a ) within the last fifteen years before applying for the
course; or
( b ) if the qualification is older than fifteen years, produce
sufficient proof of their competence to carry out such a
research degree, subject to approval by Senate on the
advice of the Board.
Recommendation.
of the academic staff willing to act as supervisor. The Board may
lay down additional requirements including the taking of one or
more qualifying examinations.
Transfer.
Ph.D. course would be awarded the M.Phil. degree or the Ph.D.
degree but not both.
Application for 
registration.
7. The application for registration for the course shall include
the title of the proposed dissertation and a brief account of it.

Dissertation format 
and presentation.
8. Unless otherwise specified by the Board, the length of the
dissertation shall not normally exceed 50,000 words.
Format. 9. The dissertation shall normally be typewritten or printed
on good quality white paper on one side only according to the
following specifications:
( a ) the size of the paper shall be A4;
( b ) the margins should be at least 40 mm to the left to
allow for binding; at least 20 mm top, bottom and right
with numbering on the bottom of each page; text to be
in double line spacing; and
( c ) the binding to be in Art vellum or cloth (preferably
black) with stiff boards; edges uncut; 15 mm to 30 mm
lettering (preferably in gold) on the front and spine
showing:
(i) the name of the student;
(ii) the title or short title of the dissertation;
(iii) the degree for which the dissertation is
submitted; and 
(iv) the year of submission.
Maps, diagrams, graphs, printed material, etc., should be
bound with the dissertation, but if this is not possible they should
be presented separately in special folders or volumes and
numbered.
Copies. 10. A student shall be required to submit three copies of the
dissertation, one of which shall be retained in the University
Library, another one in the custody of the department concerned,
and the third returned to the student after the examination.
