MOTOR VEHICLES (TARIFF OF FARES) 
REGULATIONS

3. In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires,
any reference to the General Secretary of the Central Office for
Scheduled Bus Services shall include, to the extent of the authority
given, any officer of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services
duly authorised by it for that purpose.
2 [ S.L.332.01 MOTOR VEHICLES (TARIFF OF FARES) 
1. Children up to 3 years of age shall be exempted from the payment of any
fare.
2. Children between the ages of 3 and 10 shall only pay a fare of 10 cents and
shall be entitled to occupy a seat.
3. (1) Passes, the holders of which shall be entitled to travel on motor
omnibuses at the fares for school children prescribed in the Appendix to Table I of
this Tariff during the times for which such passes are valid, shall be issued and
signed by the General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services, in
such form as the Public Transport Authority may direct, to children and students
attending schools or other recognised educational establishments under the
conditions and in the form specified hereunder:
( a ) day school passes shall be issued to all children attending recognised
schools and to students attending other recognised educational
establishments, provided the holder thereof is under eighteen years of
age. They shall be valid only on school days between 7.00 a.m. and 8.30
a.m., between 11.45 a.m. and 2.00 p.m., and between 2.30 p.m. and 4.30
p.m., and they shall contain the holder’s photograph and shall bear the
holder’s name address and date of birth, the name of the school or other
recognised educational establishment and the days and hours of
attendance by the holder;
( b ) evening school passes shall be issued to all students attending evening
classes at recognised schools or educational establishments provided the
holder is under eighteen years of age. These passes shall be valid from
one hour before the commencement to one hour after the end of the
lessons, as indicated on the pass, and on the days specified therein.
They shall contain the holder’s photograph, and shall bear the holder’s
name, address and date of birth, the name of the school or recognised
educational establishment and the days of attendance by the holder.
(2) Applications for day school or evening school passes shall be made to the
General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services in such form as
the Public Transport Authority may direct and such application shall be signed by
the head of the school or educational establishment to which the child or student, as
the case may be, belongs. Applications shall be accompanied by two photographs 38
mm by 50 mm in dimension, of the child or student to whom the application relates,
and one of such photographs shall be affixed to the relative pass.

FIRST SCHEDULE

Fares for Motor Omnibuses
General Provisions

4. (1) Children or students in possession of a pass specified in the last
preceding paragraph shall surrender such pass to the General Secretary of the
Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services through the head of the school or
educational establishment to which they belong immediately they cease to attend
such school or educational establishment.
(2) The passes referred to in paragraph 3 shall likewise be surrendered to the
General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services through the head
of the school or educational establishment and a new pass shall be substituted
therefor whenever the holder is no longer residing at the address shown on the pass
or is attending a school or educational establishment other than that indicated
therein.
(3) The passes referred to in paragraph 3 shall -
( a ) in the case of children or students under fourteen years of age, be valid
from the date of issue until the holder reaches the age of fourteen years,
and the date of expiry of the pass shall be indicated thereon;
( b ) in the. case of children or students over fourteen Years of age, be valid
for the scholastic year of issue and shall be renewed annually at the end
of each scholastic year, provided any such pass shall automatically
lapse as soon as the relative holder reaches the age of eighteen years.
5. (1) The General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services
shall issue passes. in such form as the Public Transport Authority may direct. to
apprentices under 18 years of age employed by the Government of Malta or any
Public Corporation. or by any industrial firm, which passes shall entitle the holders
thereof to pay the fares prescribed in the Appendix to Table I of this Tariff, during
the working hours of the said apprentices. Such passes shall contain the holder’s
photograph and shall bear the holder’s name, address and date of birth. the name of
the employer and the days and hours of attendance of the holder thereof.
(2) Applications for the issue of passes in accordance with sub-paragraph (1)
are to be made to the General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus
Services in such form as the Public Transport Authority may direct and are to be
signed by or on behalf of the Government Department or Corporation or by the head
of the private industrial firm as the case may be, where the apprentice is employed:
Provided that in the case of private industrial firms the declaration that
applicant is an apprentice shall be countersigned by the Director of Labour or by his
representative.
6. (1) Passes issued in terms of paragraph 3 shall be valid only for travelling
from the mace of residence of the holder to the school or educational establishment
indicated therein and vice-versa.
(2) Passes issued in terms of paragraph 5 shall be valid only for travelling from
the place of residence of the holder to the place of work and vice-versa; such passes
shall be renewed annually.
7. The General Secretary of the Central Office for Scheduled Bus Services
shall issue the gasses referred to in the preceding paragraphs not later than fifteen
days from the receipt of the application and shall not refuse any application for such
passes unless previously authorised in writing by the Public Transport Authority.
8. The Public Transport Authority shall be empowered, whenever it may deem
it expedient, to issue, renew or cancel any or all the passes referred to in the
preceding paragraphs.

9. The fares which may be charged to passengers on bus services operating
express services, weekend and public holiday express services, and services to Malta
Trade Fair Grounds shall be those specified in Part IC, Part ID and Part 1E,
respectively. 
10. The fares which may be charged to passengers travelling on any special
services which may be established from time to time by the Public Transport
Authority shall be only 20 cents.
11. Whenever a passenger, to arrive at a destination on the same bus route, has
to board a second bus of the same route, such passenger shall, for such further part of
his journey, pay the difference in the fare covering the whole route according to the
Tariff applicable at that time.
12. The holders of a Kartanzjan shall only pay a fare of 10 cents.
13. Passes for children proceeding to or from any school in Gozo shall be valid
between 7.00 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. and between 2.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. Such passes
are to be issued by the Public Transport Authority.

PART I
Explanatory note on use of Table
1. Standard fares which may be charged to passengers on bus services are
based on a zone system, i.e. Zone A, Zone B. Zone C, and Central Zone Mosta.
These zones are outlined in Part IA of this table.
2. For Fare Stage purposes each zone is detailed in Part 1B of this table. The
standard fares to be charged to passengers on bus services operating within or
between these zones are prescribed in the Appendix to the First Schedule.

TABLE I
Garage Cars (Cars for Hire)
General Provisions
1. Cars may be hired by distance or by time at option of the hirer, but, unless
the hirer expressly states at the time of hiring that he wishes to hire the car by time,
it shall be presumed that the car has been hired by distance.
2. If the car is not available for the return journey, fifty per centum (50%) of
the fare specified at A (a) may be charged for mileage up to the stand or garage from
which the car was originally hired, provided that the return fare shall not in any case
exceed 30c.
3. An increase of twenty five per centum (25%) on the total fare payable may
be charged between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
TABLE II
Self-drive cars
The charge that may be made for the hire of a self-drive car, exclusive only
of the fuel consumed, but inclusive of any other matter whatsoever (including fully
comprehensive insurance, and irrespective of the make of the car and of the mirage
covered, shall not exceed Lm6.00 for every period of twenty-four hours or any
shorter period.

Organized Tours for Tourists
The following shall be the fares for the hire of motor-cars for the
conveyance of tourists on organised excursions:
The word "tourists" means passengers arriving in these Islands and
departing therefrom by the same vessel on the same voyage.
The words "organized excursion" means a tour organized by any person or
persons on behalf of a party of tourists exceeding fifteen in number, for the purpose
of visiting places of interest in the Island.
The term "half day excursion" means excursion performed between sunrise
and 1 p.m. or between 1 p.m. and sunset.
The term "full day excursion" means excursion begun before 1 p.m. and
completed after 1 p.m. provided that the car is not retained for more than twelve
hours.

any reason, a passenger asks for an extension of the
previously requested trip to another destination, then the
use of the taxi meter shall become mandatory for such
extension.
D. The fares for taxi tours from the Malta International
Airport and Malta Seaport Terminal, regardless of the
number of passengers, day and night, and up to four
normal sized luggage, shall be the following:

E. Whoever needs the service of a taxi car for a trip leaving
the Malta International Airport shall do so through an
apposite office housed at the Malta International Airport
itself. Payment for such a trip shall be made at the said
office.
F. However, the fares regarding direct trips to the following
destinations, regardless of the number of passengers, day
and night, and up to four normal sized luggage, from the
Malta Seaport Terminal, shall be as follows:

16 [ S.L.332.01 MOTOR VEHICLES (TARIFF OF FARES) 
1. The following shall be the maximum fare for first-class motor-hearses
including one accompanying car from the towns or villages shown hereunder to the
Addolorata Cemetery:
2.  The above fares shall be reduced by twenty per cent in the case of second-
class motor hearses.
3. All fares for the conveyance of deceased children under ten years shall be
reduced by thirty per cent.
4. When a deceased person is not conveyed directly to the cemetery, but is
taken to a church or other place, for the purpose of holding a funeral service,
provided that the church or place to which the person is taken is not more than one
mile out of the normal route to the cemetery, an additional fare of sixty two cents
five mils may be charged. In all other cases an additional fare of Lm1.25c may be
charged.
5. Subject to the provisions of paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 of this Tariff:
( a ) the maximum fare to any cemetery or any burial ground, other than the
Addolorata Cemetery, from places within the area served by such
cemetery or burial ground, shall be Lm3.75c for first-class motor-
hearses including accompanying car;
( b ) in all other cases the maximum fare shall be Lm5.25c.
6. For the purpose of this Tariff a first-class motor-hearse shall be a vehicle
classified as such by the Commissioner of Police, and the same vehicle may also be
classified as a second-class motor-hearse if certain specified embellishments and
equipment, as set down in the relative licence, are removed from or not provided on
or in such vehicle. The accompanying car shall be approved for that purpose by the
Police examiners.
