BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY (HONOURS) - 
B.Ch.D. (HONS.) - DEGREE COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 101 of 1988.
Citation.
Surgery (Honours) - B.Ch.D. (Hons.) - Degree Course Regulations
and these regulations shall apply only to courses commencing
before 1988.
Admission.
Dental Surgery (Honours) a candidate must:
(i) satisfy the Entry Requirements in accordance
with regulation 3; and
(ii) complete the course of studies as laid down in
these regulations and qualify in the
examinations.
Duration of course.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery extends over a period of four years.
Entry 
requirements.
3. A candidate may apply for admission to the Course of
Dental Surgery if the applicant is in possession of:
I Three passes at Advanced Level, or equivalent (two
passes at Grade C or better and one pass at Grade D or
better) in:
Physics or Physics-with-Mathematics
Chemistry
Biology or Zoology
II Five passes at Ordinary Level, or equivalent:
The subjects offered must include:
( a ) Maltese (Malta Matriculation)
( b ) English Language
( c ) Mathematics
( d ) At least one from Arabic, French, German, Italian
( e ) Any other subject from the approved list.
N.B. No subject may be offered at both "A" and "O" Levels.

Progress tests. 5. There will be Progress tests in those subject areas, the
teaching of which extends over more than one year, as follows:
During the First Year

During the Second Year

Conservative Dental Surgery and Periodontology
Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology
Clinical Medical Sciences
During the Third Year

Assessment of 
performance.
6. A candidate will only be allowed to proceed to the
following year of the course if the Faculty Board assess his/her
performance in Progress tests as being of a pass standard.
Examinations. 7. Examinations will be held as follows:
First Year examination
Human Biology
Second Year examination

Third Year examination
Clinical Medical Sciences
Final examination

Practical and 
clinical work.
8. Before being admitted to any of the examinations, a
candidate must produce a certificate, signed by the Head of the
Department, showing that he/she has completed satisfactorily the
schedule of practical and clinical work prescribed for the year.
Examination

9. ( a ) There will be one session of examinations at the end of
the First Year, the Second Year and the Third Year of
the Course.
( b ) In addition to the requirements of regulation 6
regarding Progress tests, a candidate must pass each
year’s examination before being allowed to join the
following year of the course.
Final examination.
Year of the Course.
All subjects.
Final examination in one session unless he/she takes the
examinations as provided for in regulation 13.
Successful 
candidates.
12. ( a ) The result will show the names of successful
candidates in alphabetical order under the following
categories: First Class Honours, Second Class Honours
(Upper Division), Second Class Honours (Lower
Division), Third Class Honours and Pass.
( b ) No candidate may obtain Honours if he/she does not
pass the Final examination at his/her first attempt.
Re-sit.
in whole or in part:
(i) later than twelve months after the end of his/her
final academic semester;
(ii) unless he/she has followed satisfactorily such
courses of studies as the Faculty Board may in
each case require.
