BACHELOR OF ARTS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES - 
B.A. (REL. STUD.) - DEGREE REGULATIONS

The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of Arts in
Religious Studies - B.A. (Rel. Stud.) - Degree Regulations and
these regulations shall apply to courses starting in October 1991 or
later.
Programme of 
studies.
1.1 The course of studies leading to the B.A. Degree in
Religious Studies shall normally extend over a period of five
academic years or ten semesters of approximately fourteen weeks
each. The Board may, however, shorten this period in the case of
students who have done equivalent parts of the course in another
Faculty provided that a candidate may not be exempted from more
than one-third of the minimum number of credits required for
admission to the final examinations. Those who have followed
courses at the Faculty of Theology, may, in special cases, submit an
application for a B.A. Degree at the Institute, which will consider
each case on its own merits; in such cases, however, the Board may
demand that the student undergo such other tests as it may deem
necessary.
1.2 The entire programme of studies shall consist of a number
of study-units or courses, to each of which one or more credits are
assigned (one credit corresponding to one lecture a week for one
semester). A syllabus or catalogue, listing the courses or study-
units offered by the Institute and approved by the Board, shall be
published before the beginning of a new B.A. course, saving the
right of the Board to offer further courses on an optional basis.
1.3 The complete list of study-units required for the Bachelor’s
Degree shall include courses corresponding to 64 credits and
distributed as follows:
(i) 24 credits of basic courses in Theology and
Philosophy;
(ii) 12 credits of more advanced courses in Theology;
(iii) 9 credits of more advanced courses in Philosophy;
(iv) 15 credits in one of the following special areas of
study or ‘orientations’:
( a ) Religion and Education
( b ) Religion and Society
( c ) Any other area of study that shall be established
bv the Board from time to time and included in
the syllabus for that period of five years;
(v) 4 credits in Seminars.

The choice of the special area and of the Seminars shall be
made by each candidate before the beginning of the third semester
and after consultation with the Director or his deputy.
Examinations. 2.1 An Examination (or some other mode of assessment to be
indicated in the syllabus for each study-unit) shall be held at the
completion of each study-unit. Only successful candidates shall be
awarded with the credits attached to its study-unit. A mark, to a
maximum of 100 will be assigned by the examiner. the Pass mark
being 50.
2.2 A written Final examination shall be held at the end of the
entire course i.e. June of the Final Year, consisting of three papers
of three hours each: one in Theology, one in Philosophy and a third
one in the special area of study. A list of synthetic topics prepared
by the Director, approved by the Board, and published at least six
months before the date of the examination, shall provide the matter
out of which questions at the examination shall be set.
2.3 Those candidates who fail an examination may sit for
another session of the same examination within a period of six
months. Those who have failed in one or two papers of the Final
examination, shall be required to resit only for the paper or papers
in which they have failed. Those candidates who have been unable
to report for an examination for reasons beyond their control may
be allowed a special session.
2.4 In all other matters regarding examinations, the provisions
in force in the Faculty of Theology shall apply also in the Institute.
2.5 A long essay of about 5,000 words shall be submitted to
the administration of the Institute at least one month before the date
of the Final examination. The topic of the essay chosen by the
candidate in consultation with the Director, shall be submitted for
the approval of the Board before the end of the Fourth Year. For
each essay, a moderator shall be assigned by the Board. Four copies
of the essay, duly typed according to the specifications laid down
by the administration, shall be consigned to the Director in the
specified time. A delay in consigning these copies may preclude the
student from sitting for the Final examination.
Degrees and 
diplomas.

3.1 The Final result shall take into account the performance in
the Final examinations (30%), the long essay (10%) and the grades
obtained during the course (60%).
3.2 In the Final result the names of the candidates who qualify
for the Degree shall be published in alphabetical order according to
the following categories I, IIA, IIB, III and Pass.

4.1 In the context of these regulations:
"Institute" means the Institute of Religious Studies established
within the Faculty of Theology;
"Board" means the Board of the Institute;
"Director" means the Director of the Institute;
"administration" means the administration of the Institute:
Provided that until the Statute of the Institute of Religious

Studies is promulgated, the prerogatives belonging to the Board of
the Institute shall be exercised by the Faculty Board of Theology
and the responsibilities belonging to the Director of the Institute
shall be exercised by the Dean of the Faculty of Theology.
