POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN GERONTOLOGY 
REGULATIONS

Citation.
in Gerontology Regulations.
Eligibility.
Gerontology a candidate must have:
( a ) been registered as a regular student of the University;
( b ) successfully completed the appropriate studies (course
work, practical placement and project/dissertation) of
the course, and
( c ) satisfied all the requirements laid down in these
regulations.
Registration.
Diploma course if:
( a ) he has a degree or professional qualification from a
recognised system of higher education or appropriate
authority, in a Discipline or Science related to one of
the Caring Professions; or
( b ) he has a professional qualification acceptable in his
country of origin, together with adequate working
experience with the elderly.
2.2 A mature candidate without the above qualifications but
with an exceptional degree of experience in the field may be
considered for admission if he produces satisfactory evidence that
he has the necessary background to follow the course with profit.
Course of studies.
Gerontology consists of study-units for which not less than 20
credits are assigned. A credit is awarded on the basis of the
assessment of progress achieved on completion of a study-unit
requiring at least fifty hours of study. (Normally each study-unit
will include fourteen lectures accompanied by a number of tutorials
and course assignments). Credits will also be awarded for Practical
Placements.
3.2 A catalogue of study-units with the number of credits
assigned to each unit will be published before the start of the
course.
3.3 The course of studies will be composed of:
( a ) Module A: a common core of subjects (adding up to
eight study-units) divided between Social Gerontology
and Medical Geriatrics, to be followed by all students;
and

( b ) Module B: five study-units in either Social
Gerontology or Medical Geriatrics made up of three
compulsory study-units and two optional study-units;
and
( c ) Module C: Practical Placements to which at least
seven credits are assigned. These Practical Placements
will normally be held during the academic year; some
of these credits can however be programmed to be held
after the Final Comprehensive Examination.
3.4.1 Candidates are also required to submit a dissertation/
project of approximately 10,000 words in an approved area of
study.
3.4.2 The Dissertation/Project may be presented up to twelve
calendar months from the inception of the Course.
3.4.3 If a Dissertation is referred, the candidate will be allowed
a maximum of three calendar months to resubmit his work.
3.5.1 A course will normally start in October. The study-units
will be offered so as to enable the course of studies to be completed
within a minimum of one year full-time study.
3.5.2 A candidate may extend his studies over a maximum
period of two years provided that the Board of the Institute of
Gerontology is satisfied that there is a sufficient reason for which
he may be permitted to do so.
Assessment 
procedures.
4.1.1 The assessment of each study-unit will be carried out by
the respective lecturer together with the Co-ordinator of the Course
and, when appropriate, with other lecturers, as may be established
by the Board from time to time.
4.1.2 The Pass grades to he awarded in the assessments of all
credit work are, in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D; F
indicates a Fail.
4.1.3 A student who obtains a Grade F in any study-unit may be
allowed to present himself a second time for the assessment
procedure of that study-unit. The assessment procedure for the re-
sit will be determined by the Lecturer giving the study-unit. If he
fails in the re-sit, he will be required to register again for the entire
study-unit, or follow any other instructions issued at the discretion
of the Board of the Institute. In such cases, if successful, a student
will be awarded a Grade D.
4.2.1 A Final Comprehensive Examination will be carried out
in June and will consist of two written Papers. Students can be
required to attend a  viva voce  examination.
4.3.1 The final results obtained by the students will be
published after the Final Comprehensive Examination and/or the
viva voce examination, and of the presentation of the Dissertation/
Project, and the completion of all the Practical Placements. The
final marks will be awarded as follows:
for Course Work (including Practical Placements) - 40%
for the Dissertation/Projject - 20%

for the Final Comprehensive Examination - 40%.
4.3.2 The grades to be used in the final results in terms of 4.3.1
above are the following:
A - with Distinction,
B, C, D,
F - Failed.
